  1. Operate the engine.
  2. Compare the actual engine coolant temperature and the temperature indicated by the instrument cluster's temperature gauge.

Are the engine coolant temperature and the indicated coolant temperature within the specified value of each other?

1°C (30°F)

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 4

3

The temperature gauge functions properly.

Inspect the engine cooling system for operating conditions, as needed.

4

  1. Disconnect the connector at the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor.
  2. Connect 1 red lead of a J 33431-C at the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor connector, cavity A for CKT 35 (DK GRN).
  3. Connect the other lead to ground.
  4. Adjust the tester to 1305 ohms.
  5. Observe the indication of the temperature gauge.
  6. Adjust the tester to 49.5 ohms.
  7. Observe the indication of the temperature gauge.

Does the temperature gauge indicate the specified values after each adjustment of the tester?

37.8°C (100°F)

126.7°C (260°F)

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 6

5

Replace the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor.

Go to Step 6

6

With the tester at 49.5 ohms, does the temperature gauge indicate a temperature significantly below the specified value?

126.7°C (260°F)

Go to Step 8

Go to Step 7

7

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Go to Step 8

8

  1. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  2. Connect an ohmmeter between the instrument cluster connector, cavity B9, and the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor connector, cavity A, for CKT 35 (DK GRN).

Is the resistance above the specified value?

20 ohms

Go to Step 9

Go to Step 10

9

Repair the high resistance in CKT 35 (DK GRN) between the instrument cluster and the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor.
