Tools Required

1. Remove the spark plug wires.

Important: Rotate the engine so that the piston in the cylinder being worked on is at top dead center before removing the valve locks. This will eliminate the possibility of the valve falling inside the cylinder.




2. Remove the camshaft carrier. Refer to Camshaft Carrier Replacement .
3. Break the spark plug loose. Clean the spark plug recess.
4. Remove the spark plug.



5. Install the J 22794 to the spark plug port.
6. Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.
7. Use the J 38606 in order to compress the valve springs.
8. Disassemble the valve locks.
9. Disassemble the valve cap. Do not score the valve stem.
10. Remove the valve spring.
11. Wrap a piece of cellophane tape over the valve stem lock grooves.
12. Disassemble the valve stem oil seal.

Tools Required

1. Install the new valve stem oil seal. Press the new valve stem oil seal over the guide boss.
2. Remove the cellophane tape from the valve stem.
3. Assemble the valve spring.
4. Assemble the valve cap.



5. Compress the valve spring. Use the J 38606 .
6. Install the valve locks. Hold the valve locks in place with grease if necessary.
7. Release the valve spring. Fully seat the valve locks.
8. Shut off the compressed air. Remove the J 38606 .



9. Install the spark plug.

Tighten
Tighten the spark plug to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

10. Install the camshaft carrier. Refer to Camshaft Carrier Replacement .
11. Install the spark plug wires.
