Problem

Action

A missing/broken bearing preload spring

  1. Inspect the bearing preload spring.
  2. Replace the spring as needed.

Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

Damaged or missing anti-lash spring in the spheres

  1. Inspect the anti-lash spring in the spheres.
  2. Replace the spheres as needed.

Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

Excessive clearance between holes in support or housing and pivot pin diameters.

  1. Clean the affected components.
  2. Inspect the affected components.
  3. Replace the affected components.

Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

Loose support screws

Torque the support screws to the proper specifications.

Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .

A missing upper bearing inner race seat

Install the seat.

Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The upper bearing is not seated in the housing.

  1. Inspect the upper bearing.
  2. Use the correct special tool in order to seat the bearing in the housing.
