Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift

Disassembly Procedure

Tools Required

J 23072 Shift Tube Remover

  1. Remove the shift lever.
  2. Remove the steering column housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

  3. Object Number: 388560  Size: SH
  4. Remove the following 3 items from the steering column jacket assembly:
  5. 3.1. Remove the steering shaft seal (4).
    3.2. Remove the sensor retainer (3).
    3.3. Remove the steering wheel speed sensor assembly (2) from the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
  6. Remove the following 4 items from the steering column jacket assembly:

    4.1. Remove the lower spring retainer (1).
    4.2. Dispose of the lower spring retainer (1).
    4.3. Remove the lower bearing spring (2).
    4.4. Remove the lower bearing seat (3).

  8. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).

  9. Object Number: 343889  Size: SH
  10. Remove the steering shaft assembly from the steering column.

  11. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH
  12. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly (1) 90 degrees from the lower steering shaft assembly (2) to disengage.
  13. Separate the race and upper shaft assembly (1) from the lower steering shaft assembly (2).
  14. Remove the interlock solenoid assembly. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  15. Remove the ignition switch assembly. Refer to Ignition Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

  16. Object Number: 387382  Size: SH
  17. Remove the 4 support screws (2).
  18. Remove the steering column housing support assembly (3) from the gear shift bowl assembly (4).
  19. Remove the 2 oval head cross recess screws (5).

  20. Remove the shift lever gate (1).

  21. Object Number: 387379  Size: SH
  22. Remove the shift tube retaining ring (2).
  23. Remove the 2 thrust washers (3).
  24. Remove the shift tube assembly (7) using J 23072 .
  25. Remove the lock plate (4).
  26. Remove the wave washer (5).
  27. Remove the 2 thrust washers (6).
  28. Remove the shift bowl protector (1).
  29. Remove the shift lever spring (9).
  30. Remove the gear shift bowl assembly (8).
