Problem

Action

A misaligned column

Adujst the alignment as necessary.

Adjust, repair and/or replace the following components as necessary:

    • The bearings
    • The mounting

Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

Loose column to steering gear joints

Inspect for the correct torque. Tighten the joints as necessary. Replace the components as needed

Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

Improperly lubricated bearings

Lubricate the bearings with lithium grease as necessary.

Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

A worn or broken lower or upper steering shaft bearing

Replace the bearings as necessary.

Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

An improperly seated shaft lock retaining ring

Seat the ring firmly into the groove on the shaft.

Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

A loose sight shield

Inspect and service the shield as necessary.

Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

An improperly lubricated spherical joint

Lubricate the joint with lithium grease as necessary.
