Removal Procedure
Tools Required
Notice: Use J 36850 or equivalent during assembly in order to retain
checkballs or to lubricate components. Lubricants other than the recommended
assembly lube changes the transmission fluid characteristics and
causes undesirable shift conditions or filter clogging.
Notice: Do not overfill the transmission. Overfilling will result in foaming,
loss of fluid, and possible damage to the transmission.
- When service requires the removal of the case side cover
and/or bottom oil pan, the washers on the bolts must be inspected. A new bolt
and washer assembly should be installed if the washer is inverted.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
in General Information.

Axle in Drive Axle.
Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion
steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear or to the
intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control, which
could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
- Secure the drive axle to the steering knuckle/strut.

Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement
.
- Remove the case side cover bolts/screws.
- Remove the case side cover pan.
- Remove the case side gasket.
- Clean the case and the side case cover pan gasket surfaces with
the solvent and air dry.
Notice: If the case and oil pan flanges are not dry and free of any oil film,
leakage may result.
- Clean thoroughly all traces of the old gasket material.
Installation Procedure
- Install the case side gasket.
- Install the case side cover pan.
- Install the case side cover bolts/screws.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts/screws to 11 N·m(97 lb in).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the channel plate flange nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts/screws to 8 N·m(71 lb in).
- Install the transaxle lines. Refer to
Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement
.
- Install the raise the left side of the frame.

Transmission Mount Replacement
.
- Remove the jackstands.
- Install the exhaust pipe to the manifold. Refer to
Exhaust Pipe Replacement
in Engine
Exhaust.
Notice: When installing the intermediate shaft be sure that the shaft is seated
prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling
before shaft installation, the two matching shafts may disengage.
- Install the steering shaft to the steering gear stub shaft. Refer to
Intermediate Shaft in Steering Column.
