Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  2. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the right inner fender splash shield. Refer to Fender in Body Front End.
  4. Remove the stabilizer shaft brackets from the lower control arms. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft and Insulators in Front Suspension.
  5. Remove the right tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Refer to Tie Rod in Power Steering Gear.
  6. Remove the right lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
  7. Remove the right drive axle from the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle.
  8. Secure the drive axle to the steering knuckle.
  9. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Transmission Brace Replacement .
  10. Remove the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.

  12. Remove the extension housing bolts.
  13. Remove the axle seal. Refer to Drive Axle Oil Seal Replacement .
  14. Remove the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement .
  15. Remove the extension housing O-rings.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 97404  Size: SH
  1. Install the extension housing O-rings.
  2. Install the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement .
  3. Install the axle seal. Drive Axle Oil Seal Replacement .
  4. Install the extension housing bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 36 N·m (27 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
  7. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Transmission Brace Replacement .
  8. Install the right drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle.
  9. Install the right lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
  10. Install the right tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Refer to Tie Rod in Power Steering Gear.
  11. Install the stabilizer shaft brackets to the lower control arms. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft and Insulators in Front Suspension.
  12. Install the right inner fender splash shield. Refer to Fender in Body Front End.
  13. Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Adjust the fluid level.
  16. Inspect for the following:
  17. • Proper completion of repairs
    • Proper fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
    • Fluid leaks. Refer to Fluid Leak Diagnosis and Repair .
