Removal Procedure
Tools Required
• | J 38400 Brake
Spring Remover and Installer |
• | J 21177-A Drum
to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge |
- Raise and support the
vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
Important:
• | Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange in order
to ensure proper wheel balance upon assembly. |
• | Mark the relationship of the brake drum to the axle flange in
order to ensure proper wheel balance upon assembly. |
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the brake drum.
If difficulty is encountered in removing the brake drum, the following
steps may be of assistance:
• | Make sure that the park brake is released. |
• | Tap gently with a rubber mallet on the outer rim of the drum and/or
around the inner drum diameter by the spindle. Do not deform the drum using
excessive force. |
• | Push the park brake lever off its stop using a screwdriver through
the inspection hole (2). |
Installation Procedure
- Adjust the brakes. Refer
to
Drum Brake Adjustment
.
- Install the brake drum, aligning to the marks made during removal.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
