Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 8049 Brake Spring Remover and Installer
    • J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drum. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle flange in order to ensure proper balance upon reassembly.

  5. Remove the top springs (8) using the J 8049 .
  6. Remove the retractor spring (6) using the J 8049 .
  7. Remove the park brake equalization lever (7).
  8. Remove the shoe and lining assemblies (1) after disconnecting the park brake cable.
  9. Remove the adjusting screw assembly (9-11)
  10. • Replace any parts that show discoloration from heat, over-stress, or wear.
    • Disassemble, thoroughly clean and lubricate the adjusting screw (10) assembly before reinstallation.
    • Clean the adjusting screw threads with a wire brush.
    • Wash all of the components in clean denatured alcohol.
    • Apply brake lubricant GM P/N 1052196 (or equivalent) to the adjusting screw threads, inside the diameter of the socket and the socket face.
    • Apply lubricant until a continuous bead of lubricant is at the open end of the pivot nut and the socket when the threads are fully engaged.
    • Lubricate the 6 pads on the backing plate (5) where the brake shoes contact the backing plate.
  11. Inspect the threads of the adjusting screw for smooth rotation over full length.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the park brake equalization lever (7).
  2. Install the retractor spring (6) using the J 8049 .
  3. Install the top spring (8) using J 8049 .
  4. Install the adjusting screw assembly (9-11).
  5. Install the shoe and lining assemblies (1), after connecting the park brake cable.
  6. Adjust the brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  7. Install the brake drum, aligning them to the marks made during removal.
  8. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
