Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Scribe marks on the rear suspension strut (1) to rear suspension knuckle (6).

  5. Remove the rear wheel spindle rod bolt (4) and washer (5) from the rear wheel rear spindle rod (3).

  6. Object Number: 176769  Size: SH
  7. Remove the rear wheel spindle rod bolt and washer from the rear wheel front spindle rod (5).
  8. Remove the brake caliper and bracket. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  9. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  10. Disconnect the ABS electrical connector. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement in Antilock Brakes System.

  12. Remove the trailing arm (9) from the knuckle (6).
  13. Remove the rear suspension strut to knuckle bolts (2) and nuts (13).
  14. Remove the knuckle (6).

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the rear suspension knuckle (6).
  2. Install the rear suspension strut to knuckle bolts (2) and nuts (13). Hand start the nuts only.

  3. Object Number: 176766  Size: SH

    Important: DO NOT tighten the bolt at this time.

  4. Install the rear wheel front spindle rod (5) to knuckle (6) and snug the bolt (4).
  5. Use thread locker GM P/N 1052624 (or equivalent).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the trailing arm (9) to the knuckle (6).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten trailing arm to knuckle bolt to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).

  9. Reconnect the ABS electrical connector. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement in Antilock Brakes System.
  10. Install the rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  11. Install the caliper and bracket. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  12. Important: In order to ensure proper alignment, align the scribe marks on the rear suspension strut.

    Tighten
    Tighten the rear suspension strut-to-knuckle nuts to 112 N·m (82 lb ft).

  13. Install the rear wheel rear spindle rod (3) to knuckle bolt using thread locker GM P/N 1052624 (or equivalent).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the rod to knuckle bolts to 240 N·m (177 lb ft).

  15. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  16. Lower the vehicle.
