Parking Brake Cable Replacement Front
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 37043 Parking
Brake Cable Release Tool
- Remove the driver's side sound insulator panel. Refer to
Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
- Remove the left carpet retainer. Refer to
Carpet Retainer Replacement
, or
Carpet Retainer Replacement
in Interior Trim.
- Fold back the carpet for access.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Loosen the parking brake
cable and the equalizer.
- Remove the front cable
from the rear cable at the connector clip.
- Remove the front cable from the connector clip.
- Use the J 37043
in order to remove the front cable clip
from the underbody bracket.
- Lower the vehicle with the vehicle remaining on the hoist.
- Remove the cable button end from the lever clevis.
- Use the J 37043
in order to remove the cable from the
lever.
- Remove the cable from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the cable to the
vehicle.
- Install the cable to the parking brake lever.
- Install the cable end to the lever clevis.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
- Feed the cable through
the underbody and clip the cable into place.
- Tighten the parking brake
cable at the equalizer.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Position the carpet in place.
- Install the left carpet retainer. Refer to
Carpet Retainer Replacement

Carpet Retainer Replacement
in Interior Trim.
- Install the driver's side sound insulator panel. Refer to
Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
- Adjust the Parking Brake. Refer to
Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment

Parking Brake Cable Replacement Left Rear
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 37043 Parking
Brake Cable Release Tool
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Loosen the brake cable
at the equalizer.
- Remove the left rear cable from the front cable at the connector
clip.
- Remove the cable from the front cable guide.
- Use a J 37043
in
order to remove the cable from the equalizer.
- For parking brake cables
with rear discs, use a J 37043
in order to remove the cable from the caliper bracket and the brake
lever.
- Remove the cable from
the backing plate and the parking brake lever. Refer to
Brake Shoe Replacement
.
- Remove the cable from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the parking brake cable on the vehicle.
- Feed the cable through the equalizer and the front cable guide.
- Snap the cable conduit onto the equalizer.
- Install the parking brake
cable to the backing plate and the parking brake lever. Refer to
Brake Shoe Replacement
.
- For parking brake cables
with rear discs, install the parking brake cable to the caliper bracket and
the parking brake lever.
- Connect the left rear
cable to the front cable using a connector clip.
- Tighten the nut on the equalizer in order to remove the cable
slack.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Adjust the parking brake. Refer to
Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment

Parking Brake Cable Replacement Right Rear
Removal Procedure
Tools Required

Brake Cable Release Tool
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the brake cable
at the equalizer.
- Remove the cable from the front cable guide.
- Use the J 37043
in
order to remove the cable from the rear underbody bracket.
- Remove the rear mounting bolts to cable clips on the rear suspension
support.
- For vehicles with drum
brakes, remove the parking brake cable from the backing plate and the parking
brake lever. Refer to
Brake Shoe Replacement
.
- For vehicles with disc
brakes, use the J 37043
in order to remove the parking brake cable from the caliper bracket and the
brake lever.
- Remove the cable from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the cable into
position.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the rear
mounting bolts to the cable clips on the rear suspension support.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
- For vehicles with drum
brakes, install the parking brake cable to the backing plate and the parking
brake lever. Refer to
Brake Shoe Replacement
.
- For vehicles with disc
brakes, install the parking brake cable to the caliper bracket and the brake
lever.
- Feed the cable through the underbody cable guide and snap the
cable conduit onto the bracket.
- Install the cable threaded rod to the equalizer.
- Tighten the nut on the equalizer in order to remove the cable
slack.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Adjust the parking brake. Refer to
