Did you perform the Auto Trans Shift Lock Control System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the automatic transmission shift lock control switch power feed circuit at the automatic transmission shift lock control switch and a good ground.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the automatic transmission shift lock control switch signal circuit at the automatic transmission shift lock control switch and a good ground.
  2. Turn ON ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Press and release the brake pedal several times while observing the test lamp.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the automatic transmission shift lock control switch signal circuit at the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid and a good ground.
  2. Turn ON ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Ensure the transmission shift lever is in the PARK position.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the controlled ground circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid at the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid and battery positive voltage (B+).
  3. Turn ON ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the controlled ground circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid at the body control module (BCM) and battery positive voltage (B+).
  2. Turn ON ignition, with the engine OFF.

Repair the open in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch power feed circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Inspect for proper automatic transmission shift lock control switch adjustment. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Adjustment in Hydraulic Brakes.
  2. Inspect for poor connections at the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement (if equipped with console shift) or Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt (if equipped with column shift).
