Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the starter solenoid click?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Monitor the Starter Switch parameter in the Engine Data list.

Does the starter switch indicate Cranking when the ignition switch is in the start position?

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit from the starter solenoid.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit and a good ground.
  4. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 12

Test the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the ST relay supply voltage circuit for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the ST relay control circuit for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the ST relay coil crank voltage circuit for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch or the Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch.
  3. Connect a 10 Amp fused jumper between the crank voltage circuit and the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of the appropriate switch.
  4. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit of the PNP switch or the CPP switch and a good ground.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Test the crank voltage circuit of the PNP switch or the CPP switch for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect the PNP switch or the CPP switch for proper operation. Use the scan tool to monitor the PNP switch positions.
