Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to the following:
  3. •  Transmission Replacement in Manual Transaxle
    •  Transmission Replacement for 3-speed automatic transaxle
    •  Transmission Replacement for 4-speed automatic transaxle
  4. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the clutch and pressure plate. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Clutch.

  5. Object Number: 236535 Size: SH
  6. Remove the eight flywheel retaining bolts.
  7. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
  8. Clean any grease or dirt from the crankshaft flange outer surface using a suitable solvent.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft.
  2. Notice: Apply the proper amount of the sealant to the fastener when assembling this component. Excessive use of the sealant can prohibit the component from being assembled properly or allow the fastener to loosen. A component or fastener that is not assembled properly can loosen or fall off leading to extensive engine damage.

    Object Number: 236532 Size: SH
  3. Apply GM P/N 12345493, or the equivalent, to the flywheel retaining bolt threads (1).

  4. Object Number: 236535 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. For vehicles equipped with an Automatic Transmission, install the flywheel retaining bolts (1-8) to the crankshaft.
  6. Tighten
Tighten the eight flywheel retaining bolts in sequence for Automatic Transmission to 83 N·m (61 lb ft).

    Object Number: 236523 Size: SH
  7. For vehicles equipped with a Manual Transmission, install the flywheel retaining bolts to the crankshaft.
  8. Tighten
Tighten the eight flywheel retaining bolts in sequence for Manual Transmission to 49 N·m (36 lb ft). After the proper torque has been reached, use a J 36660-A and tighten the flywheel bolts an additional 90 degrees.

  9. If equipped with a manual transmission, install the clutch and pressure plate. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Clutch.
  10. Install the transaxle assembly. Refer to the following:
  11. •  Transmission Replacement in Manual Transaxle
    •  Transmission Replacement for 3-speed automatic transaxle
    •  Transmission Replacement for 4-speed automatic transaxle
  12. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  13. Tighten
Tighten the battery cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
