Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 409301  Size: SH
  3. Remove the bolts that secure the valve lifter guide assemblies.
  4. Remove the valve lifter guide assemblies.

  5. Object Number: 3684  Size: SH
  6. Remove the valve lifters.
  7. Inspect the valve lifters and the valve lifter guide assemblies. Refer to Valve Lifters and Guides Clean and Inspect .
  8. If a valve lifter requires replacement inspect the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

    Important: When installing new valve lifters, coat the lifters with GM engine oil supplement GM P/N 1051396 or equivalent.

  1. Install the valve lifters into the lifter bores.
  2. • Align the flat sides (top) of the lifters with the flat sides of the valve lifter guide assemblies.
    • When properly aligned, the flat side of each lifter is aligned parallel to the valve lifter guide assemblies.
    • The roller at the bottom of each lifter is aligned parallel to the camshaft lobe.

  3. Install the valve lifter guide assemblies on the valve lifters.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the screws that retain the valve lifter guide assemblies.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the valve lifter guide assemblies screws to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  7. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
