Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  2. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  3. Remove the outer tie rod ends. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  4. Remove the front exhaust pipe nuts. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 1224747  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the return line pipe (2) from the steering gear.
  7. Disconnect the pressure inlet line pipe (1) from the steering gear.
  8. Plug the opening in the power steering line pipes to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

  10. Remove the power steering gear retaining bracket bolts (1).
  11. Remove the power steering gear retaining brackets (2).
  12. Move the steering gear toward the passenger side.
  13. Move the steering gear into the underbody hole on the driver side.
  14. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.

  16. Remove the packing  (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the packing to the power steering gear.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the power steering gear with the brackets and the bolts (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bracket bolts to 50-55 N·m (36-41 lb ft).

  5. Remove the plugs from the power steering line pipes.

  7. Install the power steering pressure line pipe (1) and the return line pipe (2) to the power steering gear.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the fittings to 21-35 N·m (16-25 lb ft).

  9. Install the front exhaust pipe nuts. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement .
  10. Install the outer tie rod ends. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  11. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  12. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  13. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with power steering fluid. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  14. Inspect for leaks and correct the cause of the leaks. Refer to Power Steering Fluid Leaks .
  15. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  16. Inspect the vehicle. Refer to Straight Ahead Inspection .
  17. Measure the wheel alignment.
  18. If necessary, adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
