Disassembly Procedure


    Object Number: 1224742  Size: SH
  1. Remove the rack and pinion steering assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Replacement .
  2. Remove the adjuster plug locknut (3).
  3. Remove the adjuster plug (2).
  4. Remove the adjuster spring (1).
  5. Remove the rack bearing.

  7. Remove the dust cap (1).
  8. Remove the retaining ring (2).

  10. Remove the steering pinion dust cap (2).
  11. Notice: Use extreme care when installing the valve and pinion assembly from the steering gear housing, otherwise the valve and pinion assembly, bearing, steering gear housing ,or seal could be damaged.

  12. Remove the steering pinion locknut (1).

  14. Remove the steering pinion from the pinion bearing by hitting the pinion with the flated drift and hammer (1).

  15. Object Number: 1224739  Size: SH

    Important: Hit the drift using a hammer when the lower pinion is vertical with the drift.

  16. Remove the bearing by hitting the bearing with the flated drift and rubber hammer (1).

  18. Remove the pinion shaft seal (1).
  19. Remove the needle bearing (2).
  20. Important: The power steering gear housing and the rack gear in this vehicle is not serviceable as a unit. The faulty parts must be replaced as whole units.

  21. Remove the retaining ring (3).

Inspection Procedure

  1. Inspect the tie rod ends and the ball joints for damage. Refer to Tie Rod Inspection .
  2. Inspect the tie rod ends and the rack/pinion boot for cracks or abnormal wear.
  3. Inspect the metal part for damage.
  4. Inspect the pinion gear for damage or wear (1).

  6. Inspect the rack gear for damage or wear (2).
  7. Inspect the steering gear housing for damage or wear (1).

  8. Object Number: 1224734  Size: SH
  9. Inspect the bearings and the seal for damage.
  10. 7.1. Inspect the pinion shaft seal for leaks and wear (1).
    7.2. Inspect the needle bearing for wear (2).
    7.3. Inspect the pinion bearing for wear (3).
  11. The faulty parts must be replaced.

Assembly Procedure


    Object Number: 1224733  Size: SH
  1. Install the steering pinion gear.
  2. 1.1. Install the retaining ring (3) .
    1.2. Install the needle bearing (2).
    1.3. Install the pinion shaft seal (1) using a drift.

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the steering pinion locknut (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the pinion locknut to 40-50 N·m (30-36 lb ft).

  5. Install the dust cap (3).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the dust cap to 45-55 N·m (33-41 lb ft).

  7. Install the retaining ring (2).
  8. Install the plastic dust cap (1).

  10. Install the rack bearing.
  11. 6.1. Install the adjust spring (1) of the rack bearing.
    6.2. Tighten the adjuster plug (2).
    6.3. Tighten the plug locknut (3).
  12. Install the rack and pinion steering assembly to the vehicle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Replacement .
