Installation Procedure

  1. Install the gaskets to the cylinder head with the port blocking plates facing the rear of the engine and This Side Up stamping facing up.

  2. Object Number: 26744 Size: SH
  3. Install RTV to the front and the rear sealing surfaces on the block. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 in) bead of RTV GM P/N 1052366 or equivalent to the front and the rear of the block. Extend the bead 13 mm (1/2 in) up each cylinder head to seal and retain the gaskets.

  4. Object Number: 66456 Size: SH
  5. Install the lower intake manifold to the engine. Apply sealer, GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent, to the lower intake manifold bolts.

  6. Object Number: 31698 Size: SH
  7. Install the lower intake manifold bolts. Tighten the bolts in three steps:
  8. Tighten

    1. Tighten the bolts on the first sequence to 8 N·m (71 lb in).
    2. Tighten the bolts on the second sequence to 12 N·m (106 lb in).
    3. Tighten the bolts on the final sequence to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the wiring harness connectors and brackets.
  10. Install the upper radiator hose at the thermostat housing. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  11. Install the heater hose at the lower intake manifold. Refer to Heater Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  12. Install the coolant bypass hose. Refer to Bypass Hose Replacement in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  13. Install the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement in Engine Controls.
  14. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  15. Install the fuel supply and return lines at the rear of the lower intake manifold. Refer to Fuel Hose and Pipes in Engine Controls.
  16. Install the wiring harness and brackets.
  17. Install the cruise control cable (if equipped).
  18. Install the throttle cable and bracket. Refer to Accelerator Controls (Accelerator Control Cable) in Engine Controls.
  19. Install the transmission oil level indicator tube. Refer to Transmission.
  20. Install the EGR inlet tube, clamp, and bolt.
  21. Install the PCV valve and vacuum hoses.
  22. Install the power brake vacuum tube.
  23. Install the generator and the bracket bolt, (if needed).
  24. Install the air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  25. Install the distributor. Note the relationship of the distributor housing and rotor made at disassembly. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

Intake Manifold Replacement Upper

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable assembly from the battery negative terminal. Refer to

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
