Transfer Case Output Shaft Seal Replacement Rear

Tools Required

J 29162 Rear Retainer Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. If equipped, remove the transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  3. Remove rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  4. Object Number: 165453  Size: SH
  5. Remove the rear output shaft seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 511584  Size: SH
  1. Install the seal.
  2. 1.1. Lubricate the seal mating surface with Auto-Trac Fluid GM P/N 12378396.
    1.2. Install the seal using theJ 29162 .
  3. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  4. Check the transfer case oil level and add oil as necessary. Refer to Oil Replacement .
  5. If equipped, install the transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  6. Lower the vehicle.

Transfer Case Output Shaft Seal Replacement Front

Tools Required

    • J 43484 Front Output Shaft Seal Installer (midyear 1999 and later seal use with P/N 12474947 ONLY)
    • J 35870 Front Output Shaft Seal Installer (start of production to midyear 1999 seal use with P/N 12547656 ONLY)

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. If equipped, remove the transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  3. Remove front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  4. Object Number: 393362  Size: SH
  5. Remove the front output shaft seal.
  6. • Remove the inner sleeve of the seal first in order to remove the seal from the transfer case
    • Remove the outer area of the seal after removal of the inner sleeve of the seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 513134  Size: SH
  1. Install the seal.
  2. 1.1. Lubricate the seal mating surfaces with Dexron® III oil GM P/N 12346143.

            Important: When performing the following service procedure, the J 43484 and J 35870 seal installer are not interchangable. Use J 43484 with seal P/N 12474947. Use the J 35870 with seal P/N 12547656 only.

    1.2. Install the seal using the J 35870 for installation of start of production to midyear 1999 seal, or J 43484 for installation of midyear 1999 and later seal.
    1.3. Ensure the seal is positioned straight during installation.
  3. Check the transfer case oil level and add oil as necessary. Refer to Oil Replacement .
  4. Install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  5. If equipped, install the transfer case shields. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  6. Lower the vehicle.
