Removal Procedure
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• | Unnecessary SIR system repairs |
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
• | Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring. |
• | If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. |
- Disable
the SIR. Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
in SIR.
- Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to
Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Disconnect the ignition switch connector.
- If the vehicle has an
automatic transmission, remove the screw (1) from the automatic transmission
park lock cable. Disconnect the automatic transmission park lock cable
from the steering column lock and ignition switch cylinder.
- Remove the steering column
lock bolts (1) using a center punch.
- Turn the key to the ACC position or to the ON position.
- Remove the steering column lock and ignition switch cylinder from
the steering column.
Installation Procedure
- Position the hole in the
steering shaft in the center of the hole in the steering column jacket (2).
- Turn the key to the ACC position or to the ON position.
- Position the steering column lock and ignition switch cylinder
on the steering column.
- Turn the key to the LOCK position.
- Remove the key.
- Ensure the hub on the lock is aligned with the hole in the steering
shaft .
- Rotate the steering shaft (1) in order to ensure the steering
shaft locks.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Secure the steering column
lock and ignition switch cylinder to the steering column with 2 new
steering column lock bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts until the heads break off.
- Turn the key to the ACC position or to the ON position.
- Rotate the shaft in order to ensure smooth rotation.
- Turn the key to the LOCK position.
- Rotate the steering shaft in order to ensure the steering shaft
locks.
- If the vehicle has an
automatic transmission, connect the automatic transmission park lock cable
to the steering column lock and ignition switch cylinder. Secure the
automatic
transmission park lock cable with the screw (1).
Tighten
Tighten the screw to 2.2 N·m (19.5 lb in).
- Connect the ignition switch connector.
- Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to
Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Enable the SIR. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
in SIR.
