Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .

    Caution: Avoid taking the following actions when you service wheel brake parts:

       • Do not grind brake linings.
       • Do not sand brake linings.
       • Do not clean wheel brake parts with a dry brush or with compressed air.
    Some models or aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne in dust. Breathing dust with asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. Use a water-dampened cloth in order to remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is available commercially in order to perform this washing function. These wet methods prevent fibers from becoming airborne.

  5. Turn the shoe hold down pins (1) in order to release the shoe hold down springs (2).
  6. Remove the shoe hold down springs.

  8. Remove the following components:
  9. • The upper return spring (1)
    • The strut
    • The adjuster (2)
    • The adjuster lever
    • The adjuster spring (5)
    • The strut spring (3)
    • The pawl lever (6)
  10. Remove the lower return spring (4)

  11. Object Number: 470521  Size: SH
  12. Disconnect the park brake cable (3) from the park brake shoe lever.
  13. Remove the brake shoes with the park brake shoe lever attached.

  14. Object Number: 470554  Size: SH
  15. Remove the park brake shoe lever (1) and the retainer (3) from brake shoe (2).
  16. Inspect the brake shoes and the hardware components. Replace as necessary.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Apply Lubriplate® Lubricant, GM P/N 1050109 (Canadian P/N 5264008), or the equivalent white lithium grease, to all of the brake component metal contact points (where the brake shoe metal contacts the backing plate, the wheel cylinder, the adjustment strut, etc.) prior to installation.

  1. Install the park brake shoe lever (1) to the brake shoe (2). Secure with the retainer (3).

  2. Object Number: 470521  Size: SH
  3. Install the brake shoes with the park brake shoe lever to the vehicle.
  4. Connect the park brake cable (3) to the park brake shoe lever.

  5. Object Number: 470551  Size: SH
  6. Install the lower return spring (4).
  7. Install the following components:
  8. • The upper return spring (1)
    • The strut
    • The adjuster (2)
    • The adjuster lever
    • The adjuster spring (5)
    • The strut spring (3)
    • The pawl lever (6)

  9. Install the shoe hold down springs (2). Turn the shoe hold down pins (1) in order to secure the shoe hold down springs.
  10. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
