Removal Procedure
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
- Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
- Remove the following components:
- Disconnect the upper link of the connecting link spring of the leading shoe. This relieves tension on the upper return spring.
- Remove the upper return spring and the adjuster.
- Remove the leading shoe by unlatching the shoe from the lower return spring.
- Remove the lower return spring.
- Remove the middle spring and the adjuster lever.
- Disconnect the trailing shoe and the lining assembly.

Installation Procedure
- Connect the trailering shoe and the lining assembly.
- Install the middle spring and the adjuster lever.
- Install the lower return spring.
- Install the leading shoe by latching the shoe to the lower return spring.
- Install the upper return spring and the adjuster.
- Connect the upper link of the connecting link spring of the leading shoe.
- Install the following components:
- Install the brake drum.
Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.
Important: Before installing the components note the following procedures:
• Measure the minimum brake lining thickness. • Clean the adjuster assembly and apply grease. • Inspect the parts for heat discoloration, excessive stress or wear. If necessary, replace the shoes, the springs or the adjuster assembly. • Inspect the threads of the adjuster assembly for smooth rotation. • Do not overstretch the lower return spring and the upper return spring. • Before installing the brake drum, ensure the adjuster assembly nut is drawn all the way to the stop. The nut must not lock firmly at the end of the adjustment assembly.
