Crankshaft Balancer Replacement Prior to VIN 22358862

Special Tools

    • EN-48034 Harmonic Balancer Installer
    • J 45059 Torque Angle Meter
    • J 41816-2 Crankshaft End Protector
    • J 44226 Crankshaft Balancer Remover/Holder

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the radiator intake baffle. Refer to Air Intake Baffle Replacement - Radiator.
  2. Remove the grill. Refer to Grille Replacement.
  3. Important: When removing the diagonal brace, only remove the one bolt from the battery tray brace that is bolted to the radiator brace.

  4. Remove the radiator support diagonal brace. Refer to Radiator Support Diagonal Brace Replacement.
  5. Remove the hood latch support. Refer to Hood Latch Support Replacement.
  6. Remove the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to Cooling Fan and Shroud Replacement.
  7. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.

  8. Object Number: 637774  Size: SH
  9. Carefully loosen and remove the balancer bolt.
  10. Install J 41816-2 into the end of the crankshaft.
  11. Important: Do not pull on outer edge of the crankshaft balancer.

  12. Using the J 44226 remove the balancer.
  13. Remove J 44226 and J 41816-2 .
  14. Remove the crankshaft balancer shim from the crankshaft snout.
  15. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection.

Installation Procedure

    Important: The crankshaft balancer does not have a key-way; so the crankshaft could turn when tightening, causing an improper torque. Make sure to follow the installation procedure to prevent damage.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the torque converter access plug in the dry part of the oil pan.
  3. Use the torque converter holding tool from the J 44226 kit and secure the torque converter while tightening the crankshaft balancer.
  4. Install a new crankshaft balancer shim GM P/N 12573950 over the crankshaft snout, against the crankshaft gear.

  6. Using the EN-48034 install and seat the crankshaft balancer.
  7. Remove the EN-48034 .
  8. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 637774  Size: SH
  9. While still holding the flywheel, install the balancer washer and the bolt.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 150 N·m (110 lb ft). Use the J 45059 in order to tighten the balancer bolt an additional 180 degrees.

  11. Remove the torque converter holding tool.
  12. Install the torque converter access plug into the oil pan.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
  15. Install the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to Cooling Fan and Shroud Replacement.
  16. Install the hood latch support. Refer to Hood Latch Support Replacement.
  17. Install the radiator diagonal brace. Refer to Radiator Support Diagonal Brace Replacement.
  18. Install the grill. Refer to Grille Replacement.
  19. Install the radiator air intake baffle. Refer to Air Intake Baffle Replacement - Radiator.

Crankshaft Balancer Replacement After VIN 22358862

    • EN 46547 Flywheel Holding Tool
    • EN-48034 Harmonic Balancer Installer
    • J 45059 Torque Angle Meter
    • J 41816-A Crankshaft Balancer Remover
    • J 41816-2 Crankshaft End Protector

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.

  3. Object Number: 1386661  Size: SH
  4. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  5. Remove the torque converter access plug in the dry part of the oil pan.
  6. Use the torque converter holding tool EN 46547 and secure the torque converter while tightening the crankshaft balancer.

  7. Object Number: 856226  Size: SH
  8. Carefully loosen and remove the balancer bolt.

  9. Object Number: 869916  Size: SH
  10. Install J 41816-2 into the end of the crankshaft.
  11. Important: Do not pull on outer edge of the crankshaft balancer.

  12. Use a J 41816-A with J 41816-3 jaw puller and remove the crankshaft balancer.
  13. Remove the 3 jaw puller and the J 41816-2 .
  14. Remove the crankshaft balancer shim from the crankshaft snout.
  15. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection.

  2. Object Number: 856229  Size: SH
  3. Using the EN-48034 install and seat the crankshaft balancer.
  4. Remove the EN-48034 .
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 856226  Size: SH
  6. While still holding the flywheel, install the balancer washer and the bolt.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 150 N·m (110 lb ft). Use the J 45059 in order to tighten the balancer bolt an additional 180 degrees.

  8. Remove the torque converter holding tool.
  9. Install the torque converter access plug into the oil pan.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
  12. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement.
