LOAD EXHAUST DUE TO EXHAUST LEAK

SUBJECT: LOUD EXHAUST DUE TO EXHAUST LEAK (TIGHTEN TURBOCHARGER EXHAUST ELBOW TO TURBOCHARGER HOUSING ATTACHING BOLTS)

MODELS: 1997 CHEVROLET AND GMC G MODELS WITH 6.5L DIESEL ENGINE (VIN F - RPO L65-CMT) WITH A VEHICLE BUILD DATE FROM JUNE 19, 1997 THROUGH JULY 22, 1997

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ABOUT A LOUD EXHAUST NOISE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.

CAUSE:

TURBOCHARGER EXHAUST ELBOW TO TURBOCHARGER HOUSING ATTACHING BOLTS LOOSE.

CORRECTION:

TIGHTEN TURBOCHARGER EXHAUST ELBOW TO TURBOCHARGER HOUSING ATTACHING BOLTS USING THE PROCEDURE IN THIS BULLETIN, AS FOLLOWS:

1. REMOVE ENGINE COVER (REFER TO 'ENGINE COVER REPLACEMENT' IN INTERIOR TRIM, IN THE G VAN SERVICE MANUAL).

2. REMOVE TURBOCHARGER HEAT SHIELD (REFER TO 'TURBOCHARGER REPLACEMENT' IN ENGINE MECHANICAL - TURBOCHARGER, IN THE G VAN SERVICE MANUAL).

{INSERT FIGURE 1 (HCENGINE01) HERE}

IMPORTANT

*DO NOT USE THREAD LOCKER OR ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND ON THE TURBOCHARGER EXHAUST ELBOW TO TURBOCHARGER HOUSING ATTACHING BOLTS.

*ONE BOLT (FIGURE 1, ITEM 1) IS ON THE FRONT OF THE TURBOCHARGER HOUSING TO TURBOCHARGER EXHAUST ELBOW FLANGE, BELOW THE WASTEGATE ACTUATOR ROD, AND THE REMAINING THREE BOLTS (FIGURE 1, ITEM 2) ARE ON THE REAR OF THE TURBOCHARGER EXHAUST ELBOW TO TURBOCHARGER FLANGE.

3. TIGHTEN TURBOCHARGER EXHAUST ELBOW TO TURBOCHARGER HOUSING ATTACHING BOLTS (FIGURE 1) TO 44 N.M (32 LB FT).

4. INSTALL TURBOCHARGER HEAT SHIELD (REFER TO 'TURBOCHARGER REPLACEMENT' IN ENGINE MECHANICAL - TURBOCHARGER, IN THE G VAN SERVICE MANUAL).

5. INSTALL ENGINE COVER (REFER TO 'ENGINE COVER REPLACEMENT' IN INTERIOR TRIM, IN THE G VAN SERVICE MANUAL).

THE SERVICING DEALERSHIP IS AUTHORIZED TO CHARGE FOR TIGHTENING THE TURBOCHARGER REAR HOUSING MOUNTING BOLTS, AND 0.2 HOUR ADMINISTRATION.

WARRANTY INFORMATION FOR VEHICLES REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY, USE:

LABOR OPERATION - T2272 DESCRIPTION - TIGHTEN TURBOCHARGER REAR HOUSING MOUNTING BOLTS. LABOR TIME - 0.8 HR. PLUS 0.2 HR. FOR ADMINISTRATION TIME.
