Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 346972  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the left or the right front wheel housing panels. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  3. Remove the drive belt from the pulleys. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the water pump from the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  6. Rotate the engine until the timing marks on the injection pump gear and the camshaft gear are aligned.
  7. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
  8. Remove the fuel injection pump drive gear.

  10. Remove the fuel injection pump mounting bolts and stud.
  11. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  12. Object Number: 379669  Size: SH
  13. Remove the engine front cover to oil pan bolts.
  14. Remove the bolt from the engine front cover to the engine block.

  15. Object Number: 59864  Size: SH
  16. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 22102 Seal Installer


    Object Number: 60269  Size: SH
  1. Use the J 22102 in order to install the new engine front cover oil seal to the engine front cover.

  2. Object Number: 59866  Size: SH
  3. Apply a 2 mm (3/32 in) bead of anarchies sealant GM P/N 1052357 or an equivalent to the engine front cover sealing area.
  4. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 in) bead of RTV sealant to the engine front cover sealing surface that mates against the oil pan.

  6. Install the engine front cover to the engine block.

  7. Object Number: 379669  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the engine front cover mounting bolts.
  9. Tighten

    1. Tighten the front cover to block bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the oil pan to front cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  10. Install the fuel injection pump nuts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the fuel injection pump nuts to 42 N·m (31 lb ft).

  12. Install the fuel injection pump gear.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the fuel injection pump gear bolts to 25 N·m (20 lb ft).

  14. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  15. Install the crankshaft position sensor in the front cover. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
  16. Install the water pump to the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  17. Install the left or the right front wheel housing panels. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  18. Install the drive belt on the pulleys. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  19. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  20. Refill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  21. Reset the fuel injection pump timing. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Timing Adjustment in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
  22. Perform the TDC offset adjustment. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Top Dead Center Offset Adjustment in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
