  12. Object Number: 309558 Size: SH
  13. Remove the valve lifters from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

Important: Some engines will have both standard and 0.010 inch oversize valve lifters. The oversize valve lifter will have a 10 etched on the side. The engine block will be stamped AS on the cast pad adjacent to the valve lifter bore and on the top rail of the cylinder case above the valve lifter bore.

    Object Number: 309558 Size: SH
  1. Install the valve lifter in the engine block.

  2. Object Number: 59809 Size: SH
  3. Install the guide plate to the engine block.
  4. Install the retaining clamp in the engine block.

  5. Object Number: 59806 Size: SH

Important: Turn the crankshaft 720 degrees (two full turns) by hand after installing the clamps. This will ensure free movement of the valve laughter in the guide plates. If the engine will not turn over by hand, one or more of the valve lifters may be binding in the guide plates.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the retaining clamp bolts.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the retaining bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Install the cylinder heads on the engine block. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  9. Install the exhaust manifolds to the cylinder heads. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  10. Install the valve rocker arms, shafts and pushrods in the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .
  11. Install the valve rocker arm covers on the cylinder heads. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  12. Install the lower intake manifold on the cylinder heads. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  13. Install the upper intake manifold the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  14. Install the air cleaner assembly with the mounting brackets to the engine assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
  15. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
