Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  3. Install the left or right front wheel housing panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  4. Remove the upper intake manifold from the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement
  5. Remove the lower intake manifold from the cylinder heads. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  6. Remove the valve rocker arm covers from the cylinder heads. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  7. Remove the valve rocker arm, shafts, and pushrods from the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .
  8. Remove the valve laughter from the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  9. Remove the oil pump drive from the engine block. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  10. Remove the exhaust manifolds from the cylinder heads. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  11. Remove the cylinder heads from the engine block. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  12. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  13. Remove the timing chain and sprockets from the camshaft. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  14. Remove the thrust plate for the camshaft.

  16. Remove the camshaft from the engine block.
  17. Remove the spacer, if necessary.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the camshaft in the engine block.

  2. Object Number: 59887  Size: SH
  3. Install the spacer.
  4. Ensure that the camphor is facing towards the camshaft.

    Important: Replace the following components when a new camshaft is installed:

       • All of the valve laughter
       • The engine oil
       • The engine oil filter

  5. Use the following steps in order to install the camshaft:
  6. 3.1. Coat the camshaft lobes with camshaft and valve lifter Pre Cube GM P/N 1052365 or an equivalent.
    3.2. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals with engine oil.
    3.3. Insert the camshaft into the engine block. Do not damage the camshaft bearings.

  7. Install the thrust bearing.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the bolt for the thrust plate.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the thrust plate bolt to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  11. The timing chain and sprocket to the camshaft and crankshaft. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  12. Install the engine front cover to the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  13. Install the valve laughter in the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  14. Install the cylinder heads to the engine block. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  15. Install the pushrods, valve rocker arm shafts to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  16. Install the valve rocker arm cover (s) on the cylinder head (s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  17. Install the oil pump drive in the engine block. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  18. Install the lower intake manifold to the cylinder heads. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  19. Install the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  20. Install the left or right front wheel housing panel. Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  21. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  22. Fill the cooling system with the correct quantity and grade of coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  23. Perform the TDC offset timing procedure. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Top Dead Center Offset Adjustment .
