Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect
the negative battery cable.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to
Fuel Pressure Relief
.
- Drain the fuel tank. Refer to
Fuel Tank Draining
.
- Remove the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement
.
- Remove the fuel tank sender assembly. Refer to
Fuel Pump Replacement
.
- Observe the position of the fuel pump strainer
(3) on the fuel pump (4).
- Support the pump with one hand and grasp the strainer with the
other hand.
- Rotate the strainer in one direction and pull off of the pump.
Discard the strainer after the inspection.
- Inspect the fuel pump strainer. If the strainer is contaminated,
replace the strainer and the fuel tank should be cleaned.
- Inspect the fuel pump inlet for dirt and debris. If you find any
contaminants, replace the fuel pump. Refer to
Fuel Pump Replacement
.
Installation Procedure
- Push on the outer edge of the ferrule until the ferrule is fully
seated.
- Support the pump (4) with one hand and position
the new pump strainer (3) on the pump in the same position as observed during
the disassembly.
Important: Care should be taken not to fold over or twist the strainer, when installing
the sender assembly as this will restrict fuel flow.
- Install the new seal, the fuel sender assembly, and the lock ring (8).
Make sure the lock ring alignment holes fit over the tabs on the tank.
- Install the six washers and nuts (1) retaining the fuel
sender assembly lock ring.
- Install the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement
.
- Replace the fuel removed from the tank.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Check for fuel leaks using the following procedure:
8.1. | Turn the ignition switch to ON position for 2 seconds. |
8.2. | Turn the ignition switch to OFF for 10 seconds. |
8.3. | Turn the ignition switch to ON position. |
8.4. | Check for fuel leaks. |
