Removal Procedure

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Object Number: 59826  Size: SH

    Important: Rotate the crankshaft to the top dead center position.

  3. Remove the water pump from the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Removal
  4. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Remove the drive gear for the fuel injection pump from the camshaft.

  7. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 59839  Size: SH
  9. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  10. Object Number: 59872  Size: SH
  11. Remove the bolt that retains the timing chain sprocket to the camshaft.

  12. Object Number: 59874  Size: SH

    Important: Do not damage the square bosses of the crankshaft sprocket during the removal procedure.

  13. Remove the following components:
  14. • The timing chain
    • The camshaft sprocket
    • The crankshaft sprocket assembly

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 59874  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure that the timing marks are aligned.

  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket with the reluctor wheel square bosses facing the front.
  2. Install the camshaft sprocket with the timing chain. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should face the front.

  3. Object Number: 59872  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 170 N·m (125 lb ft).

  6. Install the engine front cover to the engine block. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  7. Install the drive gear for the fuel injection pump to the camshaft.

  9. Install the water pump to the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Installation

  10. Object Number: 59839  Size: SH
  11. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14. Test the fuel injection pump timing. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Replacement in Engine Controls.
