Inspect the battery hydrometer.

Is the battery fully charged (battery hydrometer displays a green dot)?

  1. Apply the park brake and block the wheels.
  2. Probe the starter solenoid with a J 39200 from terminal S to engine ground.
  3. Attempt to start the engine.

Does the voltage measure more than the specified value?

10 V

Go to Step 3

  1. Ensure that the battery terminals are clean and tight.
  2. Remove the starter.
  3. Clean the starter motor mounting bolts, the starter motor and the mounting surface.
  4. Install the starter.
  5. Attempt to start the engine.
  6. If the engine does not start, replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Inspect the CRANK fuse.

Is the CRANK fuse open?

--

Go to Step 5

  1. Check for a short circuit on the load side of the CRANK fuse, CKT 805 (DK BLU/WHT), and repair the short circuit if one was located.
  2. Replace the CRANK fuse.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Connect a J 39200 between ground and the power side of the CRANK fuse, cavity A 1.
  2. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL (with a manual transmission), or in PARK (with an automatic transmission).
  3. Apply the parking brake.
  4. Measure the voltage when the ignition switch is turned to the START position.

Is the voltage equal to the specified value?

B+

Go to Step 8

Repair the open in CKT 5 (YEL) between the ignition switch connector, cavity A and the CRANK fuse, cavity A 1.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Temporarily substitute a known good relay for the starter relay. Refer to Starter Motor Relay Replacement .

Does the engine start with new starter relay?

--

System OK

Go to Step 9

  1. Install the original starter relay.
  2. Examine the vehicle.

Does the vehicle have an automatic transmission?

--

Go to Step 10

  1. Place the transmission in the PARK position.
  2. Engage the park brake and block the wheels.
  3. Attempt to start the engine when the transmission is in the PARK position.
  4. Attempt to start the engine when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.

Does the engine start in either PARK or NEUTRAL (but not in both positions)?

Replace the park/neutral position (PNP) switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmission.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Connect a J 39200 between ground and connector C 1, cavity E (DK BLU/WHT ) of the park/neutral position (PNP) switch.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage.

Does the voltage equal the specified value?

B +

Locate and repair the open in CKT 805 (DK BLU/WHT) between the CRANK fuse, cavity B and the PNP switch connector, cavity E.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Connect a J 39200 between ground and cavity A (DK BLU/WHT ) of the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage.

Does the voltage equal the specified value?

B +

Go to Step 16

Locate and repair the open in CKT 805 (DK BLU/WHT) (805) between the CRANK fuse, cavity B and the CPP switch connector, cavity A.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Connect a J 39200 from ground to the PNP switch connector C 1, cavity G (automatic transmission), or the CPP switch connector, cavity C (manual transmission).
  2. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL, (manual transmission) or PARK position, (automatic transmission).
  3. Apply the parking brake.
  4. Measure the voltage while attempting to start the vehicle.

Is the voltage equal to the specified value?

B +

Go to Step 18

Replace the PNP switch (automatic transmission), or the CPP switch (manual transmission).

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Connect a J 39200 from ground to cavity 85 (PPL) of the starter relay connector.
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL, (manual transmission) or PARK position, (automatic transmission).
  3. Apply the parking brake.
  4. Measure the voltage while attempting to start the vehicle

Is the voltage equal to the specified value?

B+

Go to Step 20

Locate and repair the open in CKT 806 (PPL) between the PNP (or CPP) switch and the starter relay .

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Temporarily remove the starter relay.
  2. Connect a test light between cavity 86 (BLK) of the starter relay and B +.

Does the test light illuminate?

--

Go to Step 22

Locate and repair the open in CKT 150 (BLK) (gasoline), or CKT 250 ( BLK) (diesel), between the starter relay and G 102, (gasoline) or G 200, (diesel).

Is the repair complete?

System OK

With the starter relay temporarily removed, measure the voltage at the relay connector, cavity 30 (RED).

Is the voltage equal to the specified value?

B +

Locate and repair the open in CKT 2 (RED) between the battery and the starter relay connector, cavity 30.

Is the repair complete?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 3 (PPL) between the starter relay connector, cavity 85 and the starter S terminal.
