Differential Side Bearings Replacement 8.6, 9.5, 10.5 Inch Axle

Removal Procedure
- Remove the differential assembly. Refer to
Differential Replacement
.
- Remove the differential side bearings by doing
the following:
2.1. | For the 8.6 inch and 9.5 inch axles, install the differential
assembly into a vise. |
For the 10.5 inch axle, place a block a wood on each side of the differential
case before installing the differential case into the vise.
2.3. | Remove the differential side bearings using the J 22888-20A
. |
Installation Procedure
- Install
the differential side bearings by doing the following:
1.1. | In order to protect the differential case, install theJ 8107-4
, 8.6 inch axle, or the J 36597
, 9.5 inch or 10.5 inch axle, in the case
on the side opposite the bearing installation. |
1.2. | Install the J 25299
,
8.6 inch axle, or the J 29710
,
9.5 inch or 10.5 inch axle) (1) and the J 8092
(2) onto the differential case bearing as shown. |
1.3. | Drive the bearing onto the case using the J 25299
, 8.6 inch axle, or the J 29710
, 9.5 inch or 10.5 inch axle, and the J 8092
. |
- Install the differential assembly. Refer to
Differential Replacement
.
Differential Side Bearings Replacement 11 Inch Axle
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
• | J 29721 Differential
Side Bearing Remover |
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the axle shafts. Refer to
Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement
.
- Remove rear axle housing cover. Refer to
Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement
.
- Remove the differential case assembly. Refer to
Differential Replacement
.
Important: Mark the side bearings, the outboard shims, and the bearing cups appropriately
and place with the corresponding bearing cap.
- Remove the differential side bearings using the J 8107-2
, the J 29721
and the J 29721-70
.
Important: Mark the inboard and the outboard shims left or right.
- Remove the inboard shims.
Installation Procedure
- Determine the total shim pack size for the differential assembly.

- Install the axle shafts. Refer to
Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement
.
- Install the rear axle housing cover. Refer to
Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement
.
- Fill the axle with lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Refer to
Approximate Fluid Capacities
and
Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations
in Maintenance
and Lubrication.
- Lower the vehicle.
