Condition

Some customers may comment that the power steering fluid is foaming and leaking out of the power steering reservoir. This condition mainly occurs when starting the vehicle in cold weather (-7°C (20°F) or colder).

Cause

The power steering pump input shaft seal may not be pliable enough when extremely cold. The seal allows air to be pulled into the pump mechanism and aeration of the fluid occurs.

Correction

A new power steering pump, P/N 25903905, has been released that has an improved seal for extreme cold weather operation. Replace the power steering pump with this new pump on affected vehicles. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement (LG4/LF8 with JE3) or Power Steering Pump Replacement (LG4/LF8 with JE4) in SI.

After the power steering pump has been replaced, be sure to follow the power steering system bleed procedure in SI. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
