Did you perform the Instrument Cluster System Check?

  1. Disconnect the fuel pump and sender connector.
  2. Place the ignition switch in the RUN position.
  3. Connect 1 red lead of J 33431-C to CKT 1589 (PPL/WHT) cavity B and the other to ground.
  4. Set the resistance dials to 40ohms.
  5. The fuel gauge should indicate E or below.
  6. Set the resistance dial to 250ohms.
  7. After a short time the fuel gauge should indicate F or above.

Does the fuel gauge respond correctly?

  1. Place the ignition switch in the LOCK position.
  2. Disconnect the VCM BLUE C1 connector.
  3. Place the ignition switch in the RUN position.
  4. Connect the J 33431-C to CKT 30 (PPL) cavity 9 and the other to ground.
  5. Set the resistance dials to 0ohms.
  6. The fuel gauge should indicate E or below.
  7. Set the resistance dial to 90ohms.
  8. After a short time the fuel gauge should indicate F or above.

Does the fuel gauge respond correctly?

Replace the fuel level sender. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.

Replace the vehicle control module (VCM). Refer to VCM Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls.

Is the repair complete?

Inspect for high resistance in CKT 30 (PPL) between the VCM and the instrument cluster.

Did you find high resistance?

--

Go to Step 8

Replace the fuel gauge. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
