Fan Clutch Replacement 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, and 6.5L
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
• | J 41240 Fan
Clutch Wrench and Spanner |
Caution: Do not use or attempt to repair a damaged cooling fan assembly. Replace
damaged fans with new assemblies. An unbalanced cooling fan could fly apart
causing personal injury and property damage.
- Remove the air cleaner and the duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls --
4.3L, Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls -- 5.0L, 5.7L,
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls -- 6.5L,
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls -- 7.4L.
- Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to
Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement
.
- Remove the upper radiator
shroud from the radiator. Refer to
Radiator Replacement
.
- Remove the fan and the
clutch on the 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L using the J 41240
. Use the Spanner in order to hold the Pulley.
Remove the fan and the clutch on the 6.5L using the J 41240-5A
. Use the Spanner of the J 41240
in order to hold the Pulley.
- Remove the retaining bolts
from the fan and clutch.
- Remove the fan from the clutch.
Installation Procedure
- Install the fan to the clutch.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the retaining
bolts to the fan and clutch.
Tighten
• | Tighten the 4.3L, 5.0L, and 5.7L fan to clutch bolts to 33 N·m
(24 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the 6.5L Diesel fan to clutch bolts to 17 N·m
(13 lb ft). |
- Install the fan and clutch
on the 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L using the J 41240
. Use the Spanner in order to hold the pulley.
- Install the fan and clutch on the 6.5L using the J 41240-5A
and J 41240
. Use the Spanner in order to hold the pulley.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 57 N·m (42 lb ft).
- Install the upper radiator
shroud. Refer to
Radiator Replacement
.
- Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to
Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement
.
- Install the air cleaner and the duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls --

Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement

Fan Clutch Replacement 7.4L
Removal Procedure
- Remove the air cleaner and the duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls -- 4.3L, Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls -- 5.0L, 5.7L,
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls -- 6.5L,
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement

- Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to
Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement
- Remove the upper radiator shroud. Refer to
Radiator Replacement
.
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
in Engine Mechanical -- 4.3L,
Drive Belt Replacement
in Engine Mechanical -- 5.0L, 5.7L,
Drive Belt Replacement
in Engine Mechanical -- 6.5L or
Drive Belt Replacement
in Engine Mechanical -- 7.4L.
- Remove the fan and the
clutch retaining nuts from the coolant pump pulley.
- Remove the fan and the clutch from the vehicle.
- Remove the retaining bolts
from the fan and clutch.
- Separate the fan and clutch.
Installation Procedure
- Install the fan to the
clutch.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 33 N·m(24 lb ft).
- Install the fan and the
clutch to the vehicle.
- Install the fan and the clutch retaining nuts to the coolant pump
pulley.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Install the drive belt. Refer to

Drive Belt Replacement
