Battery Cable Replacement Battery Disconnect/Connect

Disconnecting the Negative Battery Cable for Service

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Record all preset and theft codes from the radio.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  3. Verify that all electrical components are off such as interior lights, all doors are closed, underhood lamp etc.
  4. Remove the retaining bolt from the battery negative cable.
  5. Remove the battery negative cable from the battery.
  6. Position the battery negative cable away from any body ground.
  7. Remove the auxiliary battey negative cable if equipped with two batteries.

Connecting the Negative Battery Cable for Service

  1. Verify that all electrical components are off such as interior lights, all doors are closed, underhood lamp etc.
  2. Clean the negative battery cable from corrosion using a metal brush.
  3. Install the auxiliary battery negative cable to the battery.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the auxiliary battery negative cable to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Install the battery negative cable to the battery.
  6. Install the retaining bolt to the battery negative cable.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the battery negative cable bolt to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  8. Reset the radio stations and clock.

Battery Cable Replacement Battery Cable Positive

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the coolant reservoir partially from the vehicle. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement or Surge Tank (Diesel) Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  3. Object Number: 105205  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the battery.

  5. Object Number: 184054  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the positive lead to the starter solenoid.
  7. Disconnect the positive lead to the junction block.

  8. Object Number: 105195  Size: SH
  9. Disconnect the positive lead to the generator.
  10. Remove the cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the cable to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 105195  Size: SH
  3. Connect the positive lead to the generator.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the generator output (BAT) nut to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Install the positive lead to the starter solenoid.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the positive lead to starter solenoid to 10 N·m(89 lb in).

  7. Install the positive lead to the junction block.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the junction block nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Connect the battery positive cable to the battery.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the battery terminals to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  11. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  12. Install the coolant reservoir to the vehicle. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement or Surge Tank (Diesel) Replacement in Engine Cooling.

Battery Cable Replacement Battery Cable Negative

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  2. Object Number: 105205  Size: SH
  3. Disconnect the negative ground lead from the inner fender panel.

  4. Object Number: 105211  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the negative ground from the engine.
  6. Remove the negative cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the negative cable to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 105211  Size: SH
  3. Connect the negative ground to the engine.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.     Tighten
    Tighten the negative ground bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Connect the negative ground lead to the inner fender panel.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  7. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the battery negative cable to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

Battery Cable Replacement Battery Cable Aux Positive

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the auxiliary battery.

  3. Object Number: 105205  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the positive battery cable from the junction block.

  5. Object Number: 105191  Size: SH
  6. Remove the positive battery cable retainers from the frame.
  7. Disconnect the positive battery cable from the auxiliary battery.
  8. Remove the positive battery cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the positive battery cable to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the positive battery cable to the auxiliary battery.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application.     Tighten
    Tighten the auxiliary positive battery cable to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  4. Install the positive battery cable retainers to the frame.

  6. Connect the positive battery cable to the junction block.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  8. Connect the negative battery cable to the auxiliary battery.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  10. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

Battery Cable Replacement Battery Cable Aux Negative

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the auxiliary battery.
  2. Disconnect the negative ground leads from the frame.
  3. Remove the negative battery cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the negative battery cable to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the negative ground leads to the frame.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.     Tighten
    Tighten the negative ground leads to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  4. Connect the negative battery cable to the auxiliary battery.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
