Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in engine electrical.
  2. Remove the Engine Cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement
  3. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 64537  Size: SH
  5. Remove the valve rocker arm bolt.
  6. Remove the valve rocker arm with the ball.
  7. If the pushrod is the only component to be replaced, back the valve rocker arm bolt off until the valve rocker arm can be swung away from the pushrod. Pull the pushrod out.
  8. Remove the pushrod and the pushrod guide.
  9. Store the removed components in order so that the components can be reassembled in the same location.
  10. Inspect the valve train components. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rods Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 64539  Size: SH

    Important: Make sure that the pushrod is properly seated in the valve lifter.

  1. Install the valve pushrod and the valve pushrod guide. Seat the valve pushrod in the valve lifter.

  2. Object Number: 64537  Size: SH

    Important: When new valve rocker arms and/or balls are installed, coat their bearing surfaces with high viscosity oil with zinc GM P/N 12345501 or equivalent.

  3. Install the valve rocker arm with the ball.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the valve rocker arm bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 61 N·m (45 lb ft).

  7. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  8. Connect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  9. Install the Engine Cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement .
