The injection pump delivers fuel to the individual cylinders by opening and closing a solenoid control fuel valve. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the amount of time the fuel solenoid valve takes to physically close after commanded to close. Any closure time that is out of range is seen as a fault. This response time is measured in milliseconds.
• | The battery voltage is more than 10 volts and less than 16 volts. |
• | The engine coolant temperature (ECT) is more than -1°C (34°F). |
• | The engine speed is more than 506 RPM. |
• | The requested fuel rate is more than 0 mm. |
The closure time is more than 2.5 milliseconds.
• | The control module stores the DTC information into memory when the diagnostic runs and fails. |
• | The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will not illuminate. |
• | The control module records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The control module stores this information in the Failure Records. |
• | The driver information center, if equipped, may display a message. |
• | A current DTC Last Test Failed clears when the diagnostic runs and passes. |
• | A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other non-emission related diagnostic. |
• | Clear the DTC with a scan tool. |
A weak (mechanical failure) fuel solenoid will result in a DTC P1217. If DTC P1217 is set with any other DTCs, diagnose them first. If the vehicle is running close to the DTC setting closure time, the vehicle should be checked during cold start ups and during hot conditions.
Poor performance and starting conditions will exist.
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
This step determines if DTC P1217 is a hard failure or an intermittent.
This step determines if the solenoid is malfunctioning, or if there is a problem with the PCM or wiring.

Important: Before clearing the DTCs, use the scan tool Capture Info to save the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for reference. The data in the control module is deleted once the Clear Info function is used. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? | -- | Go to Step 2
2 | Is the DTC P0370 also set? | -- | Go to DTC P0370 | Go to Step 3 |
Does the scan tool display more than the specified value? | 2.4 ms | Go to Step 4 | Go to Step 5
4 |
Does the voltage measure between the specified values? | 11-16 V | Go to Step 7 | Go to Step 6 |
5 | The DTC is intermittent. If no additional DTCs are stored, refer to Diagnostic Aids. If the additional DTCs were stored, refer to those DTC tables first. Are additional DTCs stored? | -- | Go to Diagnostic Aids
Did you complete the repair? | -- | Go to Step 8 | --

Important: Before replacing the fuel injection pump, check the fuel system for contamination. Refer to Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis . Replace the fuel injection pump. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Replacement . Did you complete the replacement? | -- | Go to Step 8 | -- |
8 |
Does the scan tool indicate the diagnostic passed? | -- | Go to Step 9 | Go to Step 2 |
9 | Does the scan tool display any additional undiagnosed DTCs? | -- | System OK |
