Equipped With The 6.6L LLY Diesel Engine

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Customer concern may be engine overheating, coolant temperature running hot, coolant blowing out of recovery tank, white smoke from exhaust, or coolant loss. If any of these conditions are present on 6.6L LLY engines produced before August 1, 2005 they may have been built with the water pump impeller installed incorrectly.

Recommendation/Instructions:

  1. Follow the current SI diagnostics for engine overheating.
  2. If no other cause can be identified per SI diagnostics, visually inspect the water pump to identify the Lot Number by looking at the top of the pump nearest the driver's side. If the number is greater than ED17 but less than ED30, replace the water pump.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
