The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

When replacing a 6.6L Duramax Diesel ECM, a technician may encounter a programming error, or the ECM may lock up during programming.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The current SI diagnostics must be completed before replacing the 6.6L Duramax Diesel ECM.

If the current diagnostics have led to a ECM replacement, continue with SI replacement procedures, and complete any applicable ECM restriction processes.

When programming the ECM a technician may find programming error codes, or the ECM may lock up during programming. Please See SI procedures for Engine Control Module Programming and Setup or Service Programming System (SPS).

If the initial ECM flash programming did not complete correctly, or the ECM locked up during programming, it is possible to re-start the programming process without damaging the ECM.

If original flash programming was incomplete, the technician should re-start the flash programming using the "ECM replace and reflash" command instead of the "reflash" command on the SPS programming terminal/station.

If programming still does not complete, or there are programming error codes, please contact the Techline Customer Support Center at 1-800-828-6860.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
