Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement Rear Drum Brakes

Tools Required

J 37043 Park Brake Cable Release Tool

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  3. Object Number: 109  Size: SH
  4. Loosen the adjuster nut at the equalizer.

  5. Object Number: 328483  Size: SH
  6. Remove the front parking brake cable from the rear parking brake cables.
  7. Remove the brake drum(s) and the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  8. Disconnect the rear cable from the park brake lever.
  9. Disconnect the rear cable(s) attachments from the frame and/or axle and/or equalizer.
  10. Disconnect the cable retainer at the backing plate. Push the cable retainer fingers in to disconnect.
  11. Remove the rear park brake cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the rear park brake cables to the park brake lever.
  2. 1.1. Slide the brake cable into the brake backing plate opening.
    1.2. Install the cable retainer into the backing plate.
    1.3. Verify the cable retainer fingers expand when the cable retainer is inserted into the backing plate.
    1.4. Pull the cable end fitting as far rearward as possible.
    1.5. Install the cable end fitting into the parking brake lever.
  3. Install the brake shoes and drum(s). Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  4. Important: When routing the cables through the guide loop, route the left side cable first.

  5. Route the rear cables through the attachments and guides at the frame and/or axle and/or equalizer.
  6. Verify the cable retainers fingers expanded and the retainers are secure at all locations for cables removed.

  7. Object Number: 328397  Size: SH
  8. Strap the right rear park brake cable tight against the rear axle.
  9. 5.1. Tighten the strap so it does not move along the rear axle.
    5.2. Secure the loose end of the strap back through the tabs in the buckle.
  10. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .
  11. Lower the vehicle.

Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement Rear Disc Brakes

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  3. Object Number: 109  Size: SH
  4. Loosen the front cable at the equalizer.

  5. Object Number: 328422  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the front cable connector from the rear park brake cable.

  7. Object Number: 328493  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the cable from the park brake lever at the rear axle.
  9. Unclip the park brake cables from the rear axle differential retainer.

  10. Object Number: 328642  Size: SH
  11. Route the cables through the cable bracket.
  12. Remove the rear park brake cable assembly.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 328642  Size: SH
  1. Route the cables through the cable bracket.
  2. Connect the rear park brake cable to the lever.

  3. Object Number: 328493  Size: SH
  4. Install the cable to the park brake lever at the rear axle.
  5. Clip the park brake cables to the rear axle differential retainer.

  6. Object Number: 109  Size: SH
  7. Install the front cable at the equalizer.
  8. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .
