J 36857 Engine Lift Bracket

Removal Procedure

  1. Block the wheels.
  2. Remove the air cleaner layer. Refer to Air Cleaner Replacement in Engine Controls - 6.6L (LB7).
  3. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  4. Disconnect the battery negative cables. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the cooling layer. Refer to Cooling Layer Removal in Engine Cooling.
  6. Drain the engine coolant and the engine block. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  7. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle so that the transmission jack will not contact the tie rod when removing the engine and transmission. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  8. Remove the charged air cooler pipes and hoses from the engine. Refer to Charged Air Cooler Hoses/Pipes Replacement .
  9. Remove the engine front crossmember. Refer to Engine Front Crossmember Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  10. Disconnect the outlet heater hose from the outlet radiator pipe at the engine.

  12. Remove the engine wire harness from all connectors and retainers. Refer to Engine Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 6.6L (LB7).

  13. Object Number: 674559  Size: SH
  14. Loosen the hose clamp and remove the radiator outlet hose from the engine.

  15. Object Number: 674532  Size: SH
  16. Loosen the hose clamp and remove the radiator inlet hose from the engine.
  17. Disconnect the fuel lines at the engine. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service in Engine Controls - 6.6L (LB7).
  18. Secure the fuel lines out of the way.
  19. Remove the bolts retaining the power steering pump front bracket to the power steering pump and the air conditioner compressor mounting bracket. Refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor and Power Steering Pump Bracket Replacement . Secure the pump out of the way.
  20. Remove the air conditioning and power steering pump mounting bracket. Refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor and Power Steering Pump Bracket Replacement .

  22. Disconnect the battery cable to the generator.

  23. Object Number: 1395838  Size: SH
  24. If equipped with an auxiliary generator, disconnect the battery cable.

  25. Object Number: 669244  Size: SH
  26. Remove the generator mounting bracket and secure to the side. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical. Note the following:
  27. • The generator does not require removal.
    • The drive belt tensioner does not require removal.
  28. Remove the bolt and the ground wire at the right front of the engine block.

  30. Remove the ground strap and harness from the right side of the engine.

  31. Object Number: 673564  Size: SH
  32. If equipped, remove the bolts holding the harness cable retainers to the lower crankcase.

  33. Object Number: 674570  Size: SH
  34. If equipped, disconnect the cord from the engine coolant heater and position out of the way.

  35. Object Number: 673568  Size: SH
  36. If equipped, remove the nut holding the battery cable bracket to the right side of the lower crankcase.

  37. Object Number: 674624  Size: SH
  38. Remove the bolt holding the auxiliary battery negative cable and the engine wiring harness ground wires to the right side of the engine.
  39. Move and secure the battery cables out of the way.
  40. Drain the engine oil.
  41. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement , to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement and to Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  43. Remove the park brake cable. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement in Park Brake.

  44. Object Number: 668379  Size: SH
  45. Remove the exhaust pipe outlet clamp. Move the clamp onto the exhaust pipe.
  46. Install a J 36857 to both rear cylinder heads.

  47. Object Number: 674703  Size: SH
  48. Install a J 36857  (1) to both front cylinder heads.
  49. Connect the 2 rear lift points with a small chain.
  50. Connect the 2 front lift points with a small chain.
  51. Install a suitable lifting device to the front chain. The engine will have to be angled in order to remove. Use a load positioning sling to assist in angling the engine.

  53. If equipped with an automatic transmission, perform steps 38-50.
  54. Drain the transmission oil. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
  55. Remove the transmission oil level indicator and the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Transmission Fluid Filler Tube and Seal Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
  56. If equipped, remove the transmission heat shield fasteners and the heat shield from the transmission.
  57. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  58. If equipped, remove the oil cooler lines from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Cooler Line Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
  59. If equipped, remove the shift cable from the transmission.

  61. Remove the wiring harness and disconnect the transmission electrical connectors.
  62. If equipped, remove the flywheel housing access cover.

  63. Object Number: 702519  Size: SH
  64. Mark the flywheel and torque converter or the flex plate relationship for reassembly purposes.
  65. Turn the flex plate using a pry bar or the engine harmonic balancer, in order to align the torque converter or flex plate bolts with the access hole or starter hole.
  66. Remove the torque converter bolts through the starter opening.

  68. If equipped, remove the fuel line from the fuel line bracket.
  69. If equipped, remove the fuel line retainer bracket from the transmission.
  70. If equipped with a manual transmission, perform the following:
  71. 51.1. Remove all electrical connectors from the transmission.
    51.2. Remove all electrical harness retainers from the transmission.
    51.3. If required, raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
    51.4. Remove the clutch cable and bracket from the transmission. Refer to Clutch Cable Return Spring and/or Bracket Replacement in Clutch.
    51.5. Remove the control lever and boot. Refer to Control Lever and/or Boot Replacement in Manual Transmission - Medium Duty.
    51.6. If equipped, remove the fuel line retainers from the transmission.
  72. Using a transmission jack, support the rear of the transmission.

  73. Object Number: 28991  Size: SH

    Important: Support the transmission with a transmission jack that can support a load of at least 349 kg (750 lb).

  74. Install a safety chain to secure the transmission to the transmission jack.
  75. Remove the transmission mount mounting bolts from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
  76. Remove the left and right front engine mounting bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Left Side and to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Right Side .
  77. Ensure the wiring harness does not become hung up on the engine.
  78. Pull the engine forward far enough to connect to the rear engine lift eye.
  79. Attach the load leveling device to the rear engine lift eye.
  80. Remove the transmission jack.
  81. Remove the engine and transmission from the vehicle.
  82. If equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following:
  83. 61.1. Attach the transmission jack.

    61.2. Remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
    61.3. Remove the transmission from the engine by sliding the transmission rearward.

    Notice: When removing the transmission, do not allow the weight of the transmission to hang on the clutch disc hub. The clutch disc will become distorted and seriously affect the operation of the clutch.

  84. If equipped with a manual transmission perform the following:
  85. 62.1. Attach the transmission jack.
    62.2. Remove the transmission apron housing bolts.
    62.3. Move the transmission straight back from the engine, keeping the mainshaft in alignment with the clutch disc hub.
    62.4. When the transmission is free from the engine, lower and remove the transmission.
  86. In order to secure the engine to an engine stand, refer to Engine Mounting to Stand and remove the following:
  87. • The engine flywheel
    •  Refer to Engine Flywheel Removal .
    • The exhaust outlet
    •  Refer to Exhaust Outlet Removal .
    • The lower oil pan
    •  Refer to Lower Oil Pan Removal .
    • The upper oil pan
    •  Refer to Upper Oil Pan Removal .
    • The engine flywheel housing
    •  Refer to Engine Flywheel Housing Removal .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 674703  Size: SH
  1. Install a J 36857  (1) to both front cylinder heads.
  2. Install a J 36857 to both rear cylinder heads.
  3. Connect a short chain to the 2 front J 36857  (1).
  4. Connect a short chain to the 2 rear J 36857 .
  5. Install a suitable lifting device. The engine will have to be angled in order to install. Use a load positioning sling to assist in angling the engine.
  6. Remove the engine from the stand. Refer to Engine Removal from Stand .
  7. Install the following:
  8. • The engine flywheel housing
    •  Refer to Engine Flywheel Housing Installation .
    • The engine flywheel
    •  Refer to Engine Flywheel Installation .
    • The exhaust outlet
    •  Refer to Exhaust Outlet Installation .
    • The lower oil pan
    •  Refer to Lower Oil Pan Installation .
    • The upper oil pan
    •  Refer to Upper Oil Pan Installation .
  9. If equipped with a manual transmission, perform steps 9-15.
  10. Shift the transmission into high gear.

  12. With the transmission mounted to a suitable dolly, move the transmission into position under the vehicle.
  13. Rotate the output shaft to align the main drive gear shaft with the clutch disc hub.

  14. Object Number: 799712  Size: SH
  15. Move the transmission forward, guiding the main drive gear shaft into the clutch disc hub.
  16. Install the transmission.
  17. • Avoid springing the clutch when installing the transmission.
    • Do not allow the transmission to drop or hang unsupported in the splined hub of the clutch disc.

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  18. Install the transmission apron housing bolts.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission apron housing bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  20. Remove the transmission jack.

  21. Object Number: 201570  Size: SH
  22. If equipped with an automatic transmission, perform steps 17-23.
  23. Reattach the transmission jack.
  24. Raise the transmission to the engine.
  25. Install the transmission to the engine while aligning the torque converter with the engine flex plate.
  26. Install the transmission to the engine bolts.
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission to engine bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  28. Install the nuts retaining the transmission fluid fill tube bracket.
  29. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission fluid fill tube bracket nuts to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  30. Install a long leveling devise to the 2 chains and support the engine and transmission.
  31. Remove the transmission jack.
  32. Position the engine and transmission into the vehicle as far as possible.

  34. Install the transmission jack.
  35. Important: Support the transmission with a transmission jack that can support a load of at least 349 kg (750 lb).

  36. Install a safety chain to secure the transmission to the transmission jack.
  37. Remove the leveling device from the rear engine lift chain eye only.
  38. Install the engine and transmission to the engine mounts.
  39. Install the left and right front engine mount bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Left Side and to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Right Side .
  40. Install the transmission mount to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
  41. If equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following:
  42. 31.1. Turn the engine flex plate using a pry bar or engine at the harmonic balancer in order to install the torque converter to the flywheel bolts.
    31.2. When reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the bolts and apply Loctite.
    31.3. Install the converter bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the torque converter to flywheel bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

    31.4. If equipped, install the flywheel housing access cover.
  43. Remove the overhead hoist.
  44. Remove the transmission jack.
  45. Install the starter assembly. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  46. Object Number: 725138  Size: SH
  47. Install the parking brake cable to the park brake linkage.
  48. If equipped with a manual transmission, perform the following:
  49. 36.1. Install all electrical connectors to the transmission.
    36.2. Install all electrical harness retainers.
    36.3. Install the clutch and bracket. Refer to Clutch Cable Return Spring and/or Bracket Replacement in Clutch.
  50. If equipped with an automatic transmission perform the following.
  51. 37.1. If equipped, install the oil cooler lines to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Cooler Line Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
    37.2. Install the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
    37.3. Connect the transmission electrical connectors and install the wiring harness to the transmission.
    37.4. If equipped, install the transmission heat shield with 2 bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the transmission heat shield bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

    37.5. If equipped, install the shift cable to the transmission.
    37.6. If equipped, install the transmission heat shield with 2 bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the transmission heat shield bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  52. If equipped, install the fuel line brackets.
  53. If equipped, install the fuel lines to the fuel line brackets.
  54. Install the propeller shaft to the transmission. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement , to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement and to Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  55. If equipped with an automatic transmission, install the transmission oil cooler lines.
  56. Lower the vehicle, if required.

  58. Install the exhaust pipe to the exhaust outlet.
  59. Install the exhaust manifold pipe to the exhaust outlet clamp.
  60. Tighten
    Tighten the exhaust pipe clamp to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).


    Object Number: 673564  Size: SH
  61. Install the harness cable to the lower crankcase with 2 bolts.
  62. Tighten
    Tighten the cable bracket bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).


    Object Number: 674624  Size: SH
  63. Install the bolts holding the auxiliary battery negative cable and the engine wiring harness ground wires to the right side of the engine.
  64. Tighten
    Tighten the cable and ground wire bolts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).


    Object Number: 1395846  Size: SH
  65. Install the engine harness to retainer and ground lead to engine block.

  66. Object Number: 673568  Size: SH
  67. If equipped, install the nut holding the battery cable bracket to the right side of the lower crankcase.
  68. Tighten
    Tighten the cable bracket nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  69. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  71. If equipped, connect the cord for the engine coolant heater.

  72. Object Number: 669244  Size: SH
  73. Install the generator mounting bracket and bolts.
  74. Tighten
    Tighten the generator mounting bracket bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  75. If equipped, install the battery cable to the auxiliary generator.

  76. Object Number: 1395836  Size: SH
  77. Install the battery cable to the generator.
  78. Tighten
    Tighten the generator battery cable nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  79. Connect the engine wiring harness to all connectors on the engine.
  80. Install the A/C compressor bracket. Refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor and Power Steering Pump Bracket Replacement .
  81. Connect the fuel hoses at the engine.
  82. Connect both fuel injection control module harness connectors.

  84. Install the engine wire harness in the retainer.
  85. Connect all engine wiring to all connectors. Refer to Engine Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 6.6L (LB7).

  87. Install the outlet radiator hose to the engine and tighten the hose clamp.

  88. Object Number: 674532  Size: SH
  89. Install the inlet radiator hose to the engine and tighten the hose clamp.
  90. Install the cooling layer. Refer to Cooling Layer Installation in Engine Cooling.
  91. Connect the inlet heater hose to the heater pipe inlet.

  92. Object Number: 1371593  Size: SH
  93. Install the engine wire harness clip to the engine bracket.
  94. Install the charged air cooler pipes and hoses to the turbocharger and the charged air cooler. Refer to Charged Air Cooler Hoses/Pipes Replacement .
  95. Fill the engine with the proper capacity and quality of engine oil. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities and to Explanation of Scheduled Services in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  96. Install the air cleaner layer. Refer to Air Cleaner Replacement in Engine Controls - 6.6L (LB7).
  97. Connect the battery negative cables. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  98. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  99. If equipped with a manual transmission, install the control lever and boot. Refer to Control Lever and/or Boot Replacement in Manual Transmission - Medium Duty.
  100. Operate the engine, inspect for coolant, oil, fuel, and exhaust leaks.
  101. Inspect for proper oil pressure.
  102. Inspect for proper engine operation.
  103. Road test the vehicle for normal operation.
  104. Inspect for coolant, oil, fuel and exhaust leaks.
