Removal Procedure
- Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to
Two-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement ,
One-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement or
Three-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement.
- Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector (3), as required.
- Remove park brake drum, if equipped. Refer to
Propeller Shaft Parking Brake Drum Replacement.
- Using the
J 3453 , if necessary (1) to hold the propeller shaft yoke, remove the yoke nut.
- Remove the propeller shaft yoke, as required.
- Remove the rear bearing cover nuts (1) or bolts (4), if equipped, and washers (5).
- Remove the rear bearing cover.
- Remove the rear oil seal.
- Clean the rear bearing cover with clean solvent.
- Inspect the bearing retainer for damage.
Installation Procedure
Note:
• | The seal lip must face toward the transmission. |
• | The seal must not be cocked or distorted. |
- Install a new seal into the housing (1), using
J 22834-A . Coat the seal lip with transmission oil.
- Install the bearing cover (2). Align the oil passages in the bearing cover and the transmission case.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the rear bearing cover nuts (1) or bolts (4), if equipped, and washers (5).
Tighten
Tighten the rear bearing cover bolts/nuts to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).
- Install the propeller shaft yoke.
- Install the propeller shaft yoke nut until snug.
- Using the
J 3453 (1) to hold the propeller shaft yoke, tighten the yoke nut, if necessary.
Tighten
Tighten the propeller shaft yoke nut to 508-542 N·m (375-400 lb ft).
- Install the park brake drum, if equipped. Refer to
Propeller Shaft Parking Brake Drum Replacement.
- Install the propeller shaft. Refer to
Two-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement ,
One-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement or
Three-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement.
- Connect the VSS electrical connector (3), as required.
