Removal Procedure

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 280860  Size: SH
  4. Remove the tilt steering column lever (1) from steering column (2).

  5. Object Number: 779  Size: SH
  6. Remove the screws that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  7. Remove the lower steering column trim cover.
  8. Tilt the trim cover down and slide it back in order to disengage the locking tabs.
  9. Remove the screws that retain the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  10. Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle .
  11. Remove the upper steering column trim cover.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 779  Size: SH
  1. Install the upper steering column trim cover.
  2. Install the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle .
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the screws that retain the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the upper steering column trim cover retaining screws to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

  6. Install the lower steering column trim cover.
  7. Install the screws that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the lower steering column trim cover retaining screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  9. Install the tilt steering column lever (1) to the steering column (2).
  10. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  11. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
