Removal Procedure
- Remove the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to
Engine Shield Replacement.
- Disconnect the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to
Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
- Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
- Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
- Disconnect the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose from the steering gear. Refer to
Power Steering Gear Inlet and Outlet Hose Replacement.
- Disconnect the lower intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to
Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
- Remove the vertical steering gear nut, washer, and bolt.
- Remove the horizontal steering gear nut, washer, and bolt.
- Remove the steering gear bracket bolts and bracket.
- Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the steering gear to the vehicle.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
Note: Hand start all bolts before finalizing any torques.
- Install the steering gear bracket and bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).
- Install the horizontal steering gear nut, washer, and bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).
- Install the vertical steering gear nut, washer, and bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).
- Connect the lower intermediate steering shaft. Refer to
Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
- Connect the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose to the steering gear. Refer to
Power Steering Gear Inlet and Outlet Hose Replacement.
- Install the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to
Engine Shield Replacement.
- Install the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to
Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
- Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding.
- Adjust the front toe. Refer to
Front Toe Adjustment.
