Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement LLR

J-39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the air conditioner (A/C) refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
  3. Remove the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to Fan Replacement.
  4. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the left front tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  6. Remove the left front wheelhouse panel. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement.
  7. Note: Some system pressure may still exist in the A/C compressor crankcase after you evacuate the system.

  8. Remove the A/C discharge hose bolt (2) from the A/C compressor.
  9. Remove the A/C suction hose bolt (3) from the compressor.
  10. Remove the A/C compressor hoses (1, 4) from the A/C compressor.
  11. Remove and discard the sealing washers.

  13. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts from the A/C compressor.
  14. Remove the A/C compressor from the vehicle.
  15. Drain and measure the A/C compressor oil. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Balancing.

Installation Procedure

  1. Adjust the proper amount of oil to the replacement compressor. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities.

  2. Object Number: 1559929  Size: SH
  3. Install A/C the compressor to the vehicle.
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Install the A/C compressor mounting bolts and tighten to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  6. Object Number: 1562448  Size: SH
  7. Install new sealing washers to the A/C hoses.
  8. Install the A/C compressor hoses to the A/C compressor.
  9. Install the A/C suction hose bolt (3).
  10. Install the A/C discharge hose bolt and tighten to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).
  11. Connect the compressor electrical connectors.
  12. Install the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to Fan Replacement.
  13. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
  14. Install the left front wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement.
  15. Install the left front tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  16. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
  17. Using J-39400-A detector , leak test the fittings.

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement LH8

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  4. Remove the right front wheelhouse panel. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement
  5. Remove the A/C drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement

  6. Object Number: 2182608  Size: SH
  7. Remove the electronic locking differential electrical connector (1) and electrical harness bracket (2) from the right frame rail and reposition.
  8. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  9. Remove compressor hoses. Refer to Discharge Hose Replacementand Suction Hose Replacement
  10. Remove all right side body mount frame cushion bolts. Refer to Frame Cushion or Insulator Replacement

  11. Object Number: 2182609  Size: SH
  12. Slowly lift the right (passenger) side of the body 1-1/4 inches off the frame and support.

  13. Object Number: 2182606  Size: SH
  14. Remove compressor mount bolts.

  15. Object Number: 2182607  Size: SH
  16. Rotate compressor and remove by backing assembly out between the frame rail and body.

Installation Procedure

  1. Rotate compressor and install by positing assembly in between the frame rail and body.
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 2182606  Size: SH
  3. Install the compressor mount bolts 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
  4. Slowly lower the right (passenger) side of the body on to the frame.
  5. Note: Body mounts/bolts must be reinstalled in their original position.

  6. Install all right side body mount frame cushion bolts. Refer to Frame Cushion or Insulator Replacement
  7. Install the compressor hoses. Refer to Discharge Hose Replacementand Suction Hose Replacement
  8. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector.

  9. Object Number: 2182608  Size: SH
  10. Install the electronic locking differential electrical connector (1) and electrical harness bracket (2) from the right frame rail and reposition.
  11. Install the A/C drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement
  12. Install the right front wheelhouse panel. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement
  13. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  14. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory
  15. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging
