Starter Solenoid Clicks, Engine Does Not Crank LG4 Engine

Perform the starting system check, if not already done. ¹ Refer to Starting System Check .

Does the engine crank?

System OK

Go to Step 2

  1. Connect a J 39200 between the outboard battery's negative terminal and the engine block.
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position, if equipped, or depress the clutch pedal if equipped with a manual transmission.
  3. Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position.
  4. Observe the voltage.

Does the voltage exceed the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 4

Locate and repair the high resistance in negative cable 50 (BLK) between the outboard battery and battery ground G400.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

  1. Connect a J 39200 between the inboard battery's negative terminal and the engine block.
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position, if equipped, or depress the clutch pedal if equipped with a manual transmission.
  3. Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position.
  4. Observe the voltage.

Does the voltage exceed the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 6

Locate and repair the high resistance in negative cable 50 (BLK) between the inboard battery and battery ground G400.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Connect a J 39200 between the outboard battery's positive terminal and starter solenoid terminal B (C2).
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position, if equipped, or depress the clutch pedal if equipped with a manual transmission.
  3. Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position.
  4. Observe the voltage.

Does the voltage exceed the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 7

Go to Step 8

Locate and repair the high resistance in positive cable 1 (BLK) between the outboard battery and the starter.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Connect a J 39200 between the inboard battery's positive terminal and starter solenoid terminal B (C2).
  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position, if equipped, or depress the clutch pedal if equipped with a manual transmission.
  3. Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position.
  4. Observe the voltage.

Does the voltage exceed the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 9

Go to Step 10

Locate and repair the high resistance in positive cable 1 (BLK) between the inboard battery and the starter.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Repair or replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Overhaul .

Does the starter solenoid still click and does the engine still not crank or crank slowly?
