Installation Procedure
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the tie rod
arm (4) to the steering knuckle (5).
- Secure the tie rod arm with the following components:
• | The tie rod arm bolts (3) |
Tighten
Tighten the tie rod arm bolts to 620-700 N·m (457-516 lb ft).
- Install the tie rod ball
joint (7) to the tie rod arm (8).
Important: Do not back off a tie rod ball joint nut in order to insert a cotter
pin.
- Install the tie rod ball joint nut (1).
Tighten
Tighten the ball joint nut.
• | Tighten the ball joint nuts on axle (2) assemblies with a 3675 kg
(8100 lb) rating to 130 N·m (95 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the ball joint nuts on all other axle assemblies to 160 N·m
(120 lb ft). |
- Advance the tie rod ball joint nut to the nearest cotter pin slot.
- Install the new cotter pin (2).
- Adjust the toe-in. Refer to
