Battery Load Test

DEFINITION: This Symptom Diagnosis Table tests a charged battery's capability to produce current. Do not perform this test unless a green dot is indicated at the battery hydrometer. Also, do not perform this test on a battery that has been frozen or otherwise damaged.

  1. Access and store any Diagnostic Trouble Codes which may be present. Refer to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls -- 2.2L or Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls -- 4.3L.
  2. Place the Ignition Switch in the Lock position.
  3. Remove the battery. Refer to the Removal Procedure in Battery Replacement .
  4. Observe that the battery hydrometer displays a green dot.
  5. Install Battery Terminal Adapters.
  6. Tighten to 15 N·m (11 Lb Ft).
  7. Connect a voltmeter between the battery's positive and negative terminals.
  8. Estimate the battery's temperature.

Is the battery's temperature over 15°C (60°F)?

Allow the Battery's temperature to reach normal. Is the battery's temperature over 15°C (60°F)?

Measure the battery voltage. Is the battery voltage 12 Volts or more?

12 Volts

Has the battery been recently discharged by a heavy or prolonged load?

Replace the battery. Refer to the Installation Procedure in Battery Replacement .

Is the new battery installed?

Has the battery been recently recharged?

  1. Connect the battery load tester as per the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Apply a 300 ampere load with the battery load tester as per the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. After 15 seconds, remove the 300 ampere load.
  4. Wait an additional 15 seconds to let the battery recover.

Has the battery's surface charge been removed?

300 Amperes

  1. Identify the load test amperage for the battery. Refer to Battery Usage for original equipment batteries. Check the battery manufacturer's nameplate for replacement batteries.
  2. Estimate the battery's internal temperature.
  3. Apply the load test amperage with the battery load tester.
  4. After 15 seconds under load, observe the voltmeter's indication.
  5. Remove the load test amperage.
  6. Look up the minimum voltage for the temperature. Refer to Battery Load Test .

Was the indicated battery voltage greater than the minimum specified?

  1. Remove the voltmeter.
  2. Remove the battery terminal adapters.
  3. Replace the battery. Refer to the Installation Procedure in Battery Replacement .

Is the new battery installed?

  1. After connecting the battery, set the Radio's clock for the correct time.
  2. Ensure that the customer is aware that the battery was disconnected and that any Radio presets were lost.
