Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check

  1. Inspect the battery for proper installation.
  2. Inspect the battery for freedom from cracking or other damage.
    • The battery is properly installed.
    • The battery is level.
    • The battery is free from physical damage.

  1. Inspect the battery terminals for proper connection.
  2. Inspect the battery terminals for excessive corrosion.
    • The battery terminals are free from corrosion.
    • The battery cables are properly connected.

  1. Inspect the battery cables for proper installation.
  2. Check that all three ground connections are clean and tight.

The battery cables are properly installed.

Inspect the battery hydrometer (eye) for a green dot.

    •  If required, clean the battery in order to view the hydrometer.
    •  If required, use a flashlight in order to provide illumination. Do not use an open flame.
    •  Any appearance of green is adequate.

The battery hydrometer displays a green dot.

Was the battery recharged or replaced in Step 4?

The battery was neither recharged nor replaced in the Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check.

If this is the base pickup without power windows, Then go to Step 9 . Otherwise, go to Step 7 .

  1. Place the Ignition Switch in the Accessory position.
  2. Attempt to operate the Radio.
  3. Attempt to operate the Windshield Wipers.
  4. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  5. Attempt to operate the blower motor in two or more speeds.
  6. Attempt to operate each of the power windows.
  7. Attempt to operate the brake lights.
  8. Observe the PRNDL indicator, if an automatic transmission is provided.
  9. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.

    • The radio, windshield wipers, blower motor, power windows, and brake lights operate.
    • The PRNDL indicator illuminates, if provided.
    • The Radio Does Not Operate in SECTION 8A-150.
    • The Windshield Wipers Do Not Operate in SECTION 8E1.
    • Both Power Windows Inoperative in SECTION 8A-120
    • Blower Motor Inoperative At Any Speed in SECTION 8A-60 (Without A/C)
    • Blower Motor Inoperative At Any Speed in SECTION 8A-63 (With A/C)
    • Stop Lamps Inoperative in SECTION 8A-110.

  1. Place the Ignition Switch in the Accessory position.
  2. Attempt to operate the Radio.
  3. Attempt to operate the Windshield Wipers.
  4. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  5. Attempt to operate the blower motor in two or more speeds.
  6. Attempt to operate the brake lights.
  7. Observe the PRNDL indicator, if an automatic transmission is provided.
  8. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.
    • The radio, windshield wipers, blower motor, and brake lights operate.
    • The PRNDL indicator illuminates, if provided.
    • The Radio Does Not Operate in SECTION 8A-150.
    • The Windshield Wipers Do Not Operate in SECTION 8E1.
    • Blower Motor Inoperative At Any Speed in SECTION 8A-60 (Without A/C)
    • Blower Motor Inoperative At Any Speed in SECTION 8A-63 (With A/C)
    • Stop Lamps Inoperative in SECTION 8A-110.

  1. Open the left front side door.
  2. Observe the courtesy lamps.
  3. Close the left front side door.
  4. Place the Hazard Switch in the On position.
  5. Observe the Hazard lamps.
  6. Place the Hazard Switch in the Off position.
  7. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  8. Check the Radio for correct time indication.
  9. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.

The interior courtesy lamps, the hazard lights and the Radio's clock operate.

    • Hazard Lamps Inoperative in SECTION 8A-110.
    • The Radio's Clock Does Not Operate in SECTION 8A-150.

  1. Place the Headlamp Switch in the Park position.
  2. Observe the parking lamps.
  3. Place the Headlamp Switch in the Head position.
  4. Observe the head lamps.
  5. Place the Headlamp Switch in the Off position.
  6. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  7. Release the park brake, if engaged.
  8. Observe the head lamps.
  9. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.
  10. Engage the park brake.

The headlights, the parking lights, and the Daytime Running Lights all operate.

    • Low And High Beam Headlamps Are Inoperative in SECTION 8A-102.
    • Park And Tail Lamps Inoperative in SECTION 8A-110.
    • The Daytime Running Lamps Do Not Operate in SECTION 8A-102.

  1. Connect a voltmeter between the Battery's positive and negative terminals.
  2. Ensure that any aftermarket accessory equipment is de-energized.
  3. Observe the battery voltage.
  4. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  5. Observe the Battery Indicating Lamp on the Instrument Cluster.
  6. Observe the Voltmeter indication on the Instrument Cluster.
  7. Observe the SERVICE ENGINE SOON Malfunction Indicator Lamp on the Instrument Cluster.
  8. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.
    • The Battery Indicating Lamp on the Instrument Cluster illuminates with the Ignition Switch in the Run position while the engine is not running.
    • The Voltmeter indication on the Instrument Cluster indicates within two volts of the voltmeter indication at the battery.
    • The SERVICE ENGINE SOON Malfunction Indicator Lamp illuminates with the Ignition Switch in the Run position while the engine is not running.

  1. Monitor starter noises as the engine is started.
  2. Place the Ignition Switch in the Start position.
  3. Observe the engine's response.
  4. Release the Ignition Switch when the engine starts or after 15 seconds if the engine does not start.
  5. Observe the Battery Indicating Lamp on the Instrument Cluster.
  6. Observe the Voltmeter indication on the Instrument Cluster.
  7. Observe the SERVICE ENGINE SOON Malfunction Indicator Lamp on the Instrument Cluster.
  8. Observe the Tachometer on the Instrument Cluster, if provided.
  9. Monitor the operation of the Generator.
  10. Allow the engine to warm up.
  11. Observe the engine's operation when warm.
  12. Attempt to operate the air conditioning system, if provided.
  13. Monitor operation of the A/C Compressor clutch or check for cold air.
  14. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.
    • The Starter Solenoid engages as the Ignition Key is placed in the Start position.
    • The Starter Motor operates without whine before the engine is running.
    • The engine starts and operates without significant driveability symptoms.
    • The engine operates smoothly when it is warm.
    • The Starter Motor stops operating when the Ignition Key is released.
    • The Starter Motor does not whine after the engine has started.
    • The Generator operates without unusual noises.
    • The Battery Indicating Light on the Instrument Cluster extinguishes after the engine starts.
    • The Voltmeter indication on the Instrument Cluster indicates between 12 and 16 volts while the engine is running.
    • The SERVICE ENGINE SOON Malfunction Indicator Lamp extinguishes when the engine starts.
    • The Tachometer, if provided, indicates engine speed.
    • The air conditioner operates to engine the clutch and provide cold air.
    •  Starter Noise Test
    •  Tachometer Inoperative
    •  Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Clutch Control Diagnosis in Engine Controls -- 2.2L.
    •  Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Clutch Control Diagnosis in Engine Controls -- 4.3L.
    • Courtesy Or Dome Lamp(s) Does Not Operate Or Stays On All The Time in SECTION 8A-114.

  1. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  2. Observe the SERVICE ENGINE SOON Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
  3. Place the Ignition Switch in the Lock position.
    •  The SERVICE ENGINE SOON Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated with the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
    • The vehicle has successfully completed the diagnostic system check.
    •  Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Inoperative in Engine Controls -- 2.2L.
    •  Malfunction Indicator Lamp Circuit in Engine Controls -- 4.3L.
