Starter Engages But Does Not Crank

DEFINITION: The Starter Solenoid can be heard to click when the Ignition Switch is placed in the Run position. However, the engine does not crank (rotate) at all or it cranks so slowly that the engine can not start. The battery does display the green dot.

  1. Estimate the battery's internal temperature. If the estimated Battery temperature is less than 21 °C (70 °F), then de-rate the battery voltage for the following testing. Refer to Battery Load Test .
  2. Remove ECM IGN Fuse 10 from the I/P Fuse Block in order to prevent the engine from starting.
  3. Connect a voltmeter between the Battery's positive and negative terminals.
  4. Place the Ignition Switch in the Start position.
  5. After fifteen seconds, observe the battery voltage.
  6. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.

Did the voltmeter indicate more than the specified voltage with the Ignition Switch in the Run position?

9.5 V

Perform the Battery Load Test and perform any required repairs. Refer to Battery Load Test .

Is the Battery Load Test complete?

  1. Connect a voltmeter between the Generator's negative terminal for the RED (2) wires and engine ground.
  2. Place the Ignition Switch in the Start position.
  3. Observe the indicated voltage.
  4. Place the ignition switch in the Off position.

Did the voltmeter indicate more than the specified voltage with the Ignition Switch in the Run position?

  1. Replace the BLK (1542)/ RED (1542) negative lead from the Generator to the Starter.
  2. Install ECM IGN Fuse 10 in the I/P Fuse Block.

Are the repairs complete?

  1. Connect a voltmeter between the Battery's negative terminal and the Generator's negative terminal for the RED (2) wires.
  2. Place the Ignition Switch in the Start position.
  3. Observe the indicated voltage.
  4. Place the ignition switch in the Off position.

Did the voltmeter indicate more than the specified voltage with the Ignition Switch in the Run position?

  1. Replace the Negative Battery Cable. Refer to Battery Cable .
  2. Install ECM IGN Fuse 10 in the I/P Fuse Block.

Are the repairs complete?

  1. Connect a voltmeter between the Battery's positive terminal and engine ground.
  2. Place the Ignition Switch in the Start position.
  3. Observe the indicated voltage.
  4. Place the ignition switch in the Off position.

Did the voltmeter indicate more than the specified voltage with the Ignition Switch in the Run position?

  1. Replace the Positive Battery Cable. Refer to Battery Cable .
  2. Install ECM IGN Fuse 10 in the I/P Fuse Block.

Remove the Starter.

    • For vehicles with 2.2L Engines, refer to the Removal Procedure in Starter Motor Replacement .
    • For vehicles with 4.3L Engines, refer to the Removal Procedure in Starter Motor Replacement .

Are the repairs complete?

  1. Inspect and clean the starter mounting surfaces and hardware as required in order to provide good grounding when the starter is re-installed.
  2. Perform the Starter No-Load Test. Refer to Starter No Load Test .
  3. Disassemble the Starter. Refer to Starter Motor Disassemble .
  4. Inspect the Starter. Refer to Cleaning and Inspection Procedure in Starter Motor Inspection .
  5. Repair, replace, or re-install the starter as determined by the inspection procedure. Refer to Starter Motor Assemble .

Is the starter ready for installation?

Install the Starter.

    • For vehicles with 2.2L Engines, refer to the Installation Procedure in Starter Motor Replacement .
    • For vehicles with 4.3L Engines, refer to the Installation Procedure in Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the starter installed?

Install ECM IGN Fuse 10 in the I/P Fuse Block.

Are the repairs complete?

Go to Step 13

  1. Place the Ignition Switch in the Start position.
  2. Observe the engine's response.
  3. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.

Did the engine crank and start?

Go to Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check .
